I received my letter of acceptance to Pitt about a month ago. About a week after that, I received a letter of acceptance to the Honors college and a letter of guaranteed acceptance to the graduate business program. I was just wondering when or if I should hear about a scholarship? I live out of state, and I'm pretty sure I meet any qualifications there are to receive some sort of scholarship. Any help would be great!

Depends. What state are you from and what are your stats. When did you apply? Scholarship committee only meets once a week on Fridays, so it could be a while before they see your application and decide what kind of funding you get. It could come as late as April.

I’m from WV. I applied in October and received my acceptance mid-November.
I have a 4.0 GPA
32 on ACT
660 on SAT Reading
620 on SAT Math
650 on SAT Writing

amil52 - actually those SAT/ACT scores are low for scholarships. If the M+R were 1450 - 1500 ragne, then you may be in the running for some money. But 1380/32 isn’t high enough. There are many OSS on this board who had higher stats and they received nothing.

amil52 actually has a 1280. My scholarship info came within a week of acceptance letter. I got a $4,000/yr engineering scholarship and honors full tuition scholarship. My CR+M is 1380 and I’m OOS.

Yeah but a lot depends on the state you come from too. I know the students in my state are held to high standards for OOS money. Other “rarer” states will take lower stats. I think a lot of kids from WV come to Pitt and so it may be harder to get money. Alaska, for example, may be easier.

Also important is if you are an URM? or do you have a “hook”? It seems Pitt will drop the SAT/ACT numbers if you have something they want. It is very hard to compare yourself to others based just on SAT/ACT scores, GPA etc. There may be something else on the application that has swayed Pitt to offer the scholarship $$$.

I’m from CT, I don’t know how many applicants Pitt has from there. I also have experience with engineering from MIT, so I guess maybe they could have been enticing? Just a guess, but I think it’s highly unlikely.

CPU -yes, sorry for the typo…it’s a 1280. If you received full tuition with a 1380 then you most likely had another hook, and I don’t think being from CT was the reason. Are you URM?

I didn’t indicate ethnicity on my application.

It was only after acceptance/scholarship awards that I indicated that I’d like to know more about the African American culture at Pitt, and they sent me “blue, black, and gold” (I probably have the colors mixed).

Did you list ethnicity on your SAT/ACT when you took the test? Did your high school forward that information to Pitt? Your SAT scrores are low for scholarship consideration.

Regardless, you are still a good student and obviously deserving of this opportunity. Congrats!

No I didn’t.

Thanks.

I don’t know how Pitt does it, but most schools have a combination of GPA+SAT. I have straight As with a rigorous courseload, so that probably offset it, I guess. Nonetheless, Pitt is an extremely affordable option now.

I hope you decide on attending Pitt. You will love it and will never regret that decision. This is an exciting time for you - so many options and choices. Enjoy!

Thank you! I haven’t visited yet, but I will come spring. I am biased towards other schools I applied to because I’ve visited those, but the playing field will soon be leveled.

If you have an opportunity to attend one of the Open Houses for admitted honors students, I would highly recommend that. It was that day that cinched it for my daughter. Since we are from the area, she had little interest in attending Pitt, thinking it was too close to home. At the Open House, it all clicked with her. Everything the students said, spoke to her. She loves it at Pitt.

I hope you end up at a school where you have that same feeling. And I’m betting Pitt will be it! :>

I am attending one of those, and maybe a UHC day. Thank you again, and I’m glad your daughter found the right place!

Still bumming over NO word on $$. Every other school has offered good money. We’re from Chicago area so I’d think geographically desirable. No other hooks though. Aargh, so frustrated.

Sujornik, I keep hoping to see a post from you that your D finally received word about a scholarship! It seems very odd to me, too, that she has not heard anything…rooting for her!
