University of San Diego

Well I just visited san diego and absolutely loved the city. Just wondering what the university of san diego is like (i am oos transfer). I plan on going to dental school after college so is SDU a route to take or will it not be big enough to get me in? Does SDU compare to the other colleges on my list?

USC, UCLA, UT-Austin, UFlorida, MSU(in-state pretty much guranteed in), UColorado-boulder,

you should prolly post under the Univ. of San Diego (USD) thread. It is under San Diego in the a-z college list.

its catholic
its supposed to be pretty good

its in the USnews top 100ish rankings (it goes through like 125ish or somethin)

burgler09,
Im pretty familiar with USD if you would like to PM

however I dont really know about dentistry

but if you have any specific questions please feel free to ask

USD is a very good school.....one of the top private schools on the west coast.

It is a good school...
however i wouldn't endorse as one of the top on the west coast, there are quite a few (Stanford, USC, Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Occidental, etc.) that are better institutions in general, with (yes, higher rankings), more money, and better opportunities in an undergrad education.

so its looked up upon in california? I hear San Diego state is kind of looked down upon and more of a party school so i kind of wanted to stay away from going there... although i'll probably be making visits there if i decided on SDU :)

USD is indeed a good, but "top private" is an exaggeration. kmass has it right.

San Diego State is a bit of a "party" school, but it's one of the better CSU schools. I would not say that it's "looked down upon."

And it's called "USD" not "SDU" so you might want to start saying it right or you're going to leave more people confused.....

errr i swear im dyslexic when i type! and i didn't mean in any way to put the school down, it is just kind of what i heard about it.

"USD is a very good school.....one of the top private schools on the west coast."

ummm not really. not even close. USD is a good school and all, but one of the top privates on the west coast. not a chance. USD is not even ranked in the top 100 Universities in US News. If the poster is applying to universities around the range of UCLA, University of Texas, USC, then the only school in San Diego that is ranked in the same range as those schools is UCSD. USD and SDSU are ranked far below those universities. The applicant should be looking at UCSD if he is looking for schools in San Diego in the same competitive range as Texas, USC and UCLA.

USD and USF are both good private schools, but I don't think they are worth the money, especially if you are a California resident. I know a guy who goes there, but he has like a $30 K scholarship. You will get a very good education at USD, but they aren't extremely selective. If you have above a 3.0 and can pay for your entire tuition (i.e. you're rich), you'll have no problem getting in.

USD, USF, and Chapman are all on the same level. Pepperdine is a little better.

Since when is Texas considered to be on the west coast?

In any event, U of San Diego, a private Catholic institution, is fine academically. The place tends to attract students from affluent backgrounds. Reportedly they hand out much $$ in an attempt to broaden the student body. Core curriculum is has a lot of required classes (including philosophy/theology) so be aware. Campus grounds considered to be among the most beautiful in the nation.

"If the poster is applying to universities around the range of UCLA, University of Texas, USC, then the only school in San Diego that is ranked in the same range as those schools is UCSD"

Although he did mention those schools, the poster said that he is applying to schools like MSU, Boulder, and Florida as well, so USD is definitely above those schools IMO.

"If you have above a 3.0 and can pay for your entire tuition (i.e. you're rich), you'll have no problem getting in. USD, USF, and Chapman are all on the same level. Pepperdine is a little better."

That's definitely not true. Nearly 70% of USD students receive financial aid, and the average admit GPA is above a 3.7 for the most recently admitted class. USD is a better school than both USF and Chapman, and I would say that it's around the same as Pepperdine.

No USD is deffiantly not around the range of Pepperdine... absolutely not. It is much closer to USF and Chapman, although USD is a bit better than those schools, but deffiantly not even close to Pepperdine. And calling USD a better school than U of Florida is ridiculous. Flordida is a far far superior school compared to USD. That is ridiculous. I know your mom works at USD if i remember right, and it is a fine school, but you are calling it one of the best private schools on the west coast and saying it is better than u of florida. come on, be realistic. i deff dont think USD is better regarded than Colorado Boulder or U of Florida. Quite the opposite. these comments are a bit ridiculous. I know litterely 5 people who got into USD with GPA's well well below a 3.5 and with SAT's below 1100. USD does however have a strong law school.

I am a biochemistry major if that means anything.. will I get research opportunities at USD? What would be some advantages of UCSD over USD since I am out of state tuition is not really going to make much of a difference. Although I'll still take USC or UCLA over either college in San Diego its just nice knowing all my choices.. and san diego is suuuccchhhh a nice city! :)

Advantages of UCSD over USD: depends if you plan on doing research or not. Do you want to work in biotech, med school/dental/optometry/PT/PA/Pharm school/etc?

I plan on dental school after undergrad

Pick any school just make sure you have a 3.5+ GPA and a DAT average of 19+. The thing about dental school is that it doesn't matter what school you go to as long as you get into one. Once you open your own practice, prestige has no bearing. Pick a school that you will have fun at and I would factor in cost as well here.

what about santa clara as far as private schools are concerned?
