University of South Carolina Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

business…fat thumbs

Ironic, my child got into Auburn but is waitlisted at USC and she declined Auburn… think they can switch?? Ha! Auburn does have an appeals process if your daughter is very interested. South Carolina does have a party culture for sure. There is a lot of it as at many large SEC schools and large schools in general. But there are also plenty of people who are not into that scene so she can find her people either way. The FOMO would maybe kick in if she wants to go Greek and be social but also limit it, then it can be a fine line but I imagine there will be others like her. Darla Moore is definitely not happy with the school right now, but not sure how much that will affect the business school.

Didn’t know anything about the Darla Moore spat (they definitely didn’t mention it on the business school tour), but it seems a bit odd. She’s mad at the school because they didn’t reach out with their condolences soon enough after her mother died last year.
She also didn’t like the choice of Caslen as president in 2019, which started the split.
You hate to lose big donors, but can’t imagine it would affect the current operations of the Business School.

Definitely a party school. Also considered the school where in state kids go who couldn’t get in to Clemson fwiw. That’s not day your can’t get a good education there, it is just a huge, metropolitan, SEC school with a big party culture.

I think you’re probably right but maybe changing a bit from couldn’t get into Clemson or maybe it’s different for OOS? We are from OOS and got in but there is way more merit at SC and Clemson 50k plus a year with little to no merit OOS is crazy. Wonder if that will have an effect in the next couple of years in SC college choice as Clemson used to give a lot more merit. Either way Columbia not seeming all that safe and it being a party school makes other school options more appealing.

Oh no!! Not safe? In what way(s)? UofSC is currently my D’s top choice, mostly due to Darla Moore acceptance and in-state tuition offer. It is by far the best deal we’ve received so far, although she is still waiting on a few (reach) full-need schools that would be less expensive were she to get in. Oh boy… :-/

Also, we haven’t heard a word from Clemson about scholarships or Financial Aid. Her portal still says “no information available for this year.” When did you receive the merit/FA info from them?

This was in the Daily gamecock the school newspaper a few days ago:

By Eva Flowe and Abbey Bech

Mar. 21, 2022, 12:05am

While all students surveyed said they feel safe on campus, 19 out of 40 students The Daily Gamecock surveyed said they did not feel safe all the time off campus.

Living in Five Points or walking there at night was a major safety concern for eight students among those interviewed.

Emma McManis, a first-year undeclared student, said she would feel safer while in the Five Points area if the emergency call boxes were extended into the downtown area.

“I live in Five Points," Kelly Brennan, a third-year political science, philosophy and criminal justice student, said. "And so, I definitely hear a lot of gunshots and stuff. And I don’t necessarily feel safe all the time there. And I think that there’s just like, I feel like the Columbia police focus more on underage drinking than they do crime controlling the city,”

Also this happened is from last April:

UofSC professor says 300 students have been drugged in past 90 days; lawmaker hopes bill will help

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Legally, there’s no such thing as a bar in South Carolina, a state senator pointed out Wednesday.

Sen. Dick Harpootlian, D-Richland, said South Carolina’s constitution states no restaurant can serve liquor unless they “primarily and substantially” serve food. But now he wants to better define what those words mean.

He hopes a bill requiring restaurants with liquor licenses to make at least 51% of their revenue from meals and non-alcoholic beverages will reduce alcohol-reduced crime in the state, particularly among minors.

“What is happening now is allowing…several hundred girls being drugged, we’ve had fights, we’ve had shootings, we’ve had drunk drivers,” Harpootlian said.

We didn’t receive merit info yet either just basing it on past max merit which was maxed at $11k ($10.5k plus a $500 award) OOS for the highest stat applicants. So based off of previous years even if you get max merit still looking at almost $50k OOS

I’m sure there’s a fair share of in-state kids wouldn’t be caught dead going to Clemson and don’t even bother applying

The thought that UofSC is the consolation prize for not getting into Clemson is “fake news”. After all, Darla Moore has a higher USNWR rating than Clemson’s business school, so there’s that. Additionally, some prefer an urban location to a remote one.

Crime is a possibility at any college campus. Being in the middle of a large city certainly opens up the campus to the misc. city crime but rural campuses are not immune either - especially if you consider that some crimes are committed by fellow students (sexual assaults). All students at all colleges need to be diligent and aware of their surroundings.

Just recently became aware that Darla Moore’s relationship with Usc and pulling funding. That’s gotta hurt the business college moving forward…
Here are quotes from a letter she sent after the death of her mother. I would think that funding will be greatly missed.

In a scathing letter sent to the USC board and administration April 5, Moore said her family received “deep expressions of appreciation and recognition from the faculty and leadership of Clemson University.” .

“What did she receive from the University of South Carolina, the recipient of the most exceptional generosity in the history of this state by virtue of her life? NOTHING,”

There is not a university in the country that would exhibit this degree of thoughtless, dismissive and graceless ignorance of the death of a parent of their largest donor,” Moore wrote. “I continue to be embarrassed and humiliated by my association with you and all you so disgracefully and incompetently display to the community you are charged to serve and to whom you look for support.”

She ended the letter saying, “The deepest regret of my life is the effort and resources I have expended on your behalf.”

I dug into this a bit after reading another comment on DM pulling funding.

While I can understand that she’s hurt that UofSC’s response to her mother’s death wasn’t quick enough (or wasn’t as quick as Clemson’s), she has also had a lot of drama with the current university president (whom she doesn’t like and tried very hard to prevent from getting hired) as well as university board members. In addition to donating the money, she is very vocal about where and how it’s spent and there has been a lot clashing between her and various boards.

This reaction just seems a little strong given that they did respond, just not in as timely a fashion as DM expected. Also, it reads to me as if she cares less about serving the students and more about telling the university and its president to K.M.A.

In any event, no doubt they’ll miss her funding but will find it elsewhere, I’m sure.

After reading her letter I suspected that she brought a lot of drama, entitlement and difficulty to the table. Of course she’s grieving so also trying to give some grace. Thanks for doing the digging and confirming my suspicions.

Well that president was a disaster so she was probably right about him and I would be disgusted too if having given millions and millions and millions. The more you invest the more you expect out of something. I’m not so sure they will be able to find someone else to fill that money gap.

So after previously posting the concerning safety issues… went to admitted student day and D was blown away… moved up her list to tie her #1. D has many options and on paper higher ranked schools but the campus is so beautiful and there seems to be student support every where you look. The day was set up really well and the atmosphere was relaxed and fun! Felt like you’re not just a number there. Carolina definitely did a great job of selling the school.

Oh, THANK YOU for following up… I can’t even tell you how much I appreciate it. I have been losing sleep for the past week over this, because UofSC is my D’s best option (maybe ONLY option financially) right now and I am literally praying that she likes it when we visit for ASD on April 9th. Whew!! Feel so much better, and so happy for you and your D!!

I’m glad I followed up! Don’t lose anymore sleep. It was awesome! It is my favorite and my D has really good options like NC state etc. after driving around the area surrounding the campus I’m not too worried. It’s a city so the kids will need to be more aware of their surroundings at night etc but I’m no more worried now than at any other city campus. And it’s a smaller city. A great thing about being in the capital city is there are a lot of internship opportunities so more pluses than minuses I’d say. The students seem really happy social and relaxed too. To me it seems like a really great place to go to college! Good luck! Hope you kiddo loves it too!!

S22 also has other more selective options but loved the campus at USC when we visited this weekend. The gym and the sports facilites were impressive. We walked from the main campus to the sports complex (about 1/2 mile) and it was completely safe to walk on foot. He is now leaning towards accepting the generous in state tuition offer plus Capstone invitation.

My DD is in the same place, has some excellent options, but loved UofSC and was admitted to the SCHC, and the DMSB IB program. Columbia feels like a big little town to us (we live in a major NE city). We walked from the Vista to our hotel on the other side of campus after dinner and we didn’t feel threatened. That doesn’t mean that one wouldn’t need to be aware of their surroundings, but we aren’t talking Chicago or Temple.

It was a really nice weekend.
The campus is so beautiful. Also being from the NE (outside of Philly), I laughed when one of the students said something about the city. While I understand the Columbia is a city, I felt like it was manageable and safe (we walked in the Vista section too).
Good luck to your new Gamecock!
