University of Texas @ Austin Class of 2025 After you've been accepted....Q&A

@makp715, not sure of your question? Are you wanting your student to live in an apartment or on campus dorms? I have no idea how UT area apartment leases work, but I have a friend whose 16 year old has an apartment at A&M right now. I just signed for my 19 year old as a guarantor so that is probably what they did for her as a minor.

Thanks, we also looked at other states regarding an apartment if she couldn’t get into the form and some do now allow at minor to live in an apartment without a parent or adult responsible for them. I know UT Austen doesn’t guarantee housing so it’s a concern.

My son would also like to live in honors quad. He did the housing application back when he applied, but if you don’t accept the decision until April do you still have a chance at honors housing?

Have you looked into the Living Learning Communities at various dorms (like Jester, Moore-Hill, etc)? It sounds like the LLCs give students a sense of community that could be similar to the Honors Quad experience. You can find LLC info on the UT Housing website.

the “housing que” is based on when you applied to UT

Isn’t it based on when you paid the housing deposit?

I don’t think the EE students (4 guys from the same high school) that shared a room would stand to live in those conditions. I can clarify with their mom though. They were on the 14th floor and BHP female student was on 15th floor, utilized the study rooms a lot. We have requested the 15 floor for our son. I like that you can know what kind of room you will live in sooner than June or July. We toured in January and it was really nice. My husband lived in Dobie as a freshman and was concerned that people wouldn’t respect the property in private dorms, but he like Callaway for our son.

Yes, there are lots of apartments and you can buy a commuter meal plan. The problem is that everything on west campus is expensive. We own a condo and rent it out, it’s tiny and we’re able to get over 1k in rent per month for a 1BR studio on Rio Grande and 21st. Prime location. For freshman regardless, I would highly recommend a dorm, even if it’s not honors. If you want a quiet dorm, I would not recommend Callaway, even though there are many non-Greek students. It can be loud and very social, however, they have tons of study rooms, both on every other floor and in the cafe.

@Aguadecoco , I think you are good on your timestamp (didn’t he apply pretty early, like Augustish?) but I think the issue will be housing contracts start coming out March 1. Someone on here posted that you only have 10-14 days to sign once you get the contract. I haven’t been following the big 2025 thread----what is the latest with your son? Are y’all still waiting on other schools? What is his #1 choice right now?

@praha23 , good suggestion on the LLC. I kinda forgot about those. He is doing pretty well with Mandarin and has fun talking to his Asian friends in Chinese. I think I remember Whitis having an International LLC but not sure how things are going with covid and all.

@100lbdog , so y’all toured and all? Okay, good to know. I bet it helps to have already known entities for roommates to fill up the other 3 rooms. My son doesn’t know anyone going to UT so he is looking at potluck I guess. BTW, I love your user name. Do you really have a 100 lb dog or is it more like a 10 pounder? lol

@srparent15 , thanks for your thoughts especially on freshman living on campus and Calloway not being ideal for a quiet dorm experience. That’s good stuff.

D was AA back in Oct and accepted to her major a few weeks ago - financial aid says “check back in two weeks” but has had that message for weeks now. Is this the norm?

He applied in October. UT is towards the top of his list, but he is waiting on RD apps before committing.

We just leased an efficiency for our son at Dobie Twenty21. He wanted private dorm so wouldn’t close down for COVID, liked the location for McCombs, non greek. I was concerned about the reviews as well but his exact words were “roaches don’t bother me.” He’s a practical one.

@RS2000 , may I ask what all y’all looked at in deciding on Dobie? Do you mean by private dorm that it is just a 1 bedroom/1 bathroom? Could you pick the floor?

That is great your son is so laid back! My son hates scorpions so if there are roaches that probably means no scorpions are there to eat them!

Private dorm meaning not UT official/on campus dorm. But Dobie’s location was probably the biggest influence. He preferred to live in a single but wasn’t a deal breaker. The private dorms didn’t shut down with COVID. You can request specific rooms closer to time of move in when they know what is available but not guaranteed. They have roommate matching service if you want one. The students that work there were incredibly helpful and nice. It’s definitely the least expensive among Calloway/Castillian/Dobie but reflects this as well.

My freshman daughter lives in Castilian and we have been pleased. She is in a sorority but it is nowhere near all Greek and can be as social or as studious as you want to be.

My son didn’t commit until about April when he was a freshman (2019) and he got into the quad but with a potluck roomie. He is now an RA in the honors quad. It is almost empty this year and I doubt it is filling up yet, as most schools haven’t announced their honors students (for sure CNS hasn’t). So, I think he will be okay.
