Other than pharm/dentistry, is UOP known for anything else?
I think they have some music program and study abroad program that’s pretty interesting. I haven’t visited UOP yet - is it better than UCSC or on par with it?

ucsc is a great school period. and its beautiful, great place, and its NOT stockton

But UOP has a law school, and I’m planning to go into law…

-_-

UCSC sounds much more appealing though…

you can go to a law school anywhere, go somewhere nice for your undergrad

ajdavidson, so law schools don’t consider you more if you went to their undergrad school, if they have one?

lol you say go somewhere nice…What is nice? I only got accepted at 4 schools haha. UOP, a CSU, and UCSC and UCM (Which are all nice schools, but not like Stanford or anything lol)

well…i just wouldnt consider anywhere near stockton a nice place. it gets the worst weather of all california (hot and cold side) its ghetto as ****e in the city, and for me at least its not that prestigious.

ucsc is beautiful, great campus, has a beach, has donts of great aspects that i just dont think uop can offer.

but i guess ^ that is all opinion.

ps no, when you apply to a law school or any grad school it is all up to an application. some schools WILL give you slight priority or extra points for undergrad-ing with them because their programs are similar, but not an auto or anything close.

lol yeah, of course it’s not an auto. Haha.
The beach! And forests. I’ve never been to santa cruz and I’ve lived here for almost 18 years lol.

I’ve been to stockton alot, and though they do have some decent food…I do want to get away.
k thanks! :)

I knew 3 people who went to UOP–two of them transfered out. It’s a small school and it’s kind of in a weird area. I heard it’s boring unless you join a sorority/frat (not my thing, personally)

But it depends on your preference. It takes a certain person to like UC Santa Cruz–it isn’t for everyone. But, it is a UC and it will provide a great education.

Good luck on making your decision!

I go to UCSC and love it, and my sister goes to UoP and loves it, lol. I’ve visited her on campus, and it’s really beautiful, with old brick buildings covered in ivy and a big water tower thing. She seems to really enjoy the classes and atmosphere there. I liked their new dining hall/community center building. It’s state of the art, and they have a pretty good restaurant/bar there. One major concern, though, is that it is in Stockton, and it is in a rough part at that. There have been several armed robberies in the campus area, and I know my sister does not feel safe walking around alone, which sucks.

UCSC is awesome. It’s like going to school in summer camp. Redwood trees, deer running around, and fog rolling in from the ocean in the morning. Very scenic. As for classes, things are getting kind of shaken up right now with the budget cuts. The engineering department seems to be somewhat ok, though a lot of courses that used to meet three times a week are now two week, and the professors are adjusting their material which is not fun. The humanities are pretty hard hit right now. Classes are getting harder to get into, and there are more of us in there. I think UoP would be better able to insulate against the type of stuff we’re dealing with right now. I’m not saying it’s completely unbearable, but it’s something to consider before coming here.

All in all, I’d say they are both pretty good schools. My bias obviously lies toward UCSC, but it’s definitely not a school for everybody. I hope you enjoy wherever you wind up!

Thanks statescraft; I’m actually going to visit UOP today at 11 AM…which probably means that my family should be on their way…which we’re not…lol.

I’m not ruling it out, but Idk! I have to see. lol. I’m pretty liberal and I like the scenic, but college is for academics, and not the scenery. Haha. We’ll see!
Thanks!

hopefully you choose UCSC, because the name sounds so much cooler :). UOP campus to me is boring -.-

So everybody, I checked out UOP and UCSC…I love UCSC, it’s amazing. It’s gorgeous, what it has to offer sounds pretty good, except…it’s more expensive and a little farther than Merced. My parents both liked UCSC, but the thing is…Merced is a little cheaper, and the road/time to get there is not such a hassle.

Which sucks, 'cause, you know, I’d LOVE to go to UCSC…
I’m still waiting on the financial aid offer, but chances are Merced is still gonna be cheaper. I understand I gotta make some sacrifices, but still lol…

Anybody wanna throw me a free 20 grand? lol

lol :/. You should go to UCSC over UCM :O. UCM degrees arent accredited yet :(

Are they really? But they had a graduating class last year lol. Is that accredation debate still going on haha. I really would rather go there…But I don’t want to risk robbing a bank you see…lol

when i did spring spotlight my guide was a graduation senior from ucsc and she was going to law school next year, she said she got into 9 of her 12 law schools she applied to. so its not like it would look bad coming from ucsc. you just need to focus on school i guess.

She didn’t tell you specifically which schools she got into… or at least which school she was planning to attend? Hm… kinda sketchy.

dchaves, I don’t really understand your post, lol, sorry.

I’m sure I’ll do well at any school, I just wish I could go to UCSC over UCM, though yes, they are both just undergraduate schools…

hey everyone! i just visited UCSC and UOP and i thought i’d share what i found here.

i have to say that i came to UOP with an already found love of UCSC, so UOP was already far behind. i love UCSC’s amazing forest-y campus and, even though i was worried about it being a party school, the entire campus had a very serene feel to it, which i loved. the kids i talked to all seemed super nice and like they genuinely loved the school they go to. yes, they did say it was a party school, but in a different way than most. not so much drinking CRAZY parties, more smoking laid-back parties. from the feel of the campus and from the students i talked to, it seemed like you can stay away from that scene pretty easily if you so chose.

i went to UOP’s Students of Color/Distinction, and i felt like the small-school feel was not for me. i felt like they were almost suffocating me with attention, which some students may benefit from. i also felt like the students werent as laid back as those at Santa Cruz (but thats also keeping in mind that UCSC is full of hippies haha). UOP has a beautiful campus; it looks like the average college from all the movies, with brick buildings and lots of green and trees. the kids i talked to loved being able to walk across campus and say hi to almost every kid they saw becuase they love the small-school, family, community feel. however, i did not find the same amount of passion in “i love my school” as i did at UCSC, but it was still there. and the town of stockton is pretty dead, and if you go too far, its also not that safe. the social event i went to at the school, called “tiger nights”, wasnt all that lively; the vibe of middle-of-nowhere was very strong, although i heard that wasnt usual for tiger nights.

overall, i’m glad i visited because i discovered that, to me, a small school is not for me. so i can proudly say i am a BANNANA SLUG. good luck to those also considering UCSC and/or UOP.

^^Thanks for the word lol.
UOP definitely is beautiful, but in a more pristine, classical way; not really my style.

sigh
I wish I could go to UCSC.
Prays for 20 grand to fall from the sky lol jk

@whatthefriction–have you heard back from FAFSA yet?? I got 29,000 from them, and my family lives comfortably. You never know what will come through.
