FYI, I contacted my son’s Admission Officer and requested to visit the university.
We were told that there are no official visits allowed and sent us a link for a virtual tour.
A personal email yesterday, 1 B+ in AP Calculus, 12 APs all 4s and 5. Not sure of her weighted or unweighted GPA, our school does not figure it. They gave my DD $10,000/year. She got significantly more money, up to full OOS tuition scholarships at several state flagship schools. What was most shocking, Utah is our highest price school, costing more than even some privates such as Fordham. What is worst, she has to maintain a 3.5 on a +/- system to hold onto that. Her full OOS scholarship at another school is a 3.0 on a 10 point scale to maintain the award. That is a lot of stress to hold onto such a small scholarship. It wasn’t meant to be.
DD got flagship scholarship to her Umail so it is not just the Presidential that were announced
My son received the OOS President’s Scholarship yesterday. Does anyone know which upperclass housing options will allow us to use the $5K? I’m talking about housing he would apply for during years 2-4. He was accepted to the honors program, but it looks like the APARTMENTS - DONNA GARFF MARRIOTT HONORS RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS COMMUNITY would be excluded because it is apartment style housing. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
My S has chosen another school, but I just received an email from the Northern Ca admissions rep. that there will be in person tours starting in April.
Just wanted to share this for anyone who hasn’t seen from their admissions rep.
The scholarships can be applied to any of the HRE run housing listed here (these are all designated as “on campus”): https://housing.utah.edu/housing-options/undergraduate-housing/
MHC is a very popular choice for Honors since it has a full kitchen and doesn’t require a meal plan. HRE also runs brand new apartments at Block 44 which are really nice (look at the pictures of the gym in the building) and just across the street from Trader Joe’s, and you can use your scholarship grant there too even though they are not physically on campus.
@HankCT - FWIW, we haven’t received any award yet and I have stalked some other sites to see that we are not alone. They say that will roll out the awards through this week…but, gotta admit it does not feel like a good sign to have not been in the first wave.
For what it’s worth we applied really early 1 month before deadline so that might be a reason we got ours first.
Twoin18 - Thank you for your response. Just to clarify, are you saying that although the Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community (MHC) states that it “features apartment living” it is still an option for the $5K supplement even thought that supplement states that it excludes “University Student Apartments?”
That has been the case on previous years - D has used her scholarship at both MHC and Block 44. You should check, but by “University Student Apartments” I believe they mean the non-HRE family and graduate apartments (Sunnyside, etc) listed here: https://apartments.utah.edu/
Does anyone else in this group have a quiet, STEM focused, Christian (Protestant) son looking for an honors roommate in Kahlert? My son got his reservation time. Although we are still not 100% certain he is going to Utah, we want to reserve a room so we don’t lose out on the option. It is still at the top of his list if we can swing it.
Thank you! I will check, but that makes sense to me.
My son is going to be in the Business Scholars LLC in Kahlert, so we are also looking for potential roommates. He is a skier, soccer player, plays a bit of tennis and loves to workout. Has your son checked out the university’s class of 2025 Instagram page? Lots of kids posted a bit about themselves on there, and there seem to be a lot of STEM kids. Also, if you haven’t already, you should check out the roommate recommendations on the Housing section of his CIS account. Your son can reach out to boys that matched well with his lifestyle preference answers on his application.
My DD was accepted to the Kahlert Honors LLC. Does anyone know which floor/tower she can choose from during room selection? Is it a designated floor in each of the towers? There is no tower specified in her email. TIA for any guidance.
Reach out directly to Housing for info. They’re very responsive. They replied to my son very quickly yesterday.
Has anyone heard a schedule for Eccles? I know they pushed the deadline to 3/16. Any idea when they’ll make decisions about next steps?
Does anyone here NOT have a 4.0 UW GPA?
D2 has ~3.7 UW, 4.4W, and curious if anyone without a perfect GPA (we have very few of those in our school that also have heavy AP course load) has gotten merit awards. Sometimes I feel as though most or all people on CC are the few who have perfect grades.
My Dd received a B+ in AP Calculus, and her merit was dropped down to $10000/yr. She does have 12 AP classes. So not a 4.0
My DD has a 3.9 UW and received $14,000 (OOS). She was accepted into Honors.
Utah has always emphasized perfect UW GPA for merit. A few years ago the net price calculator used to give you an estimate of merit aid and had ranges for UW GPA with different results: 4.0, 3.96-3.99 and IIRC 3.8-3.95.
I’m guessing Utah makes it relatively easy to get a 4.0 like in CA (and counts an A-/anything over 90% as 4.0): at my kids school, which isn’t a top school, about 20 kids out of 350 graduated with a 4.0, most with 6+ APs.
