No, I think you covered it pretty well, as usual. I haven’t been following this thread recently but will take a look and see if there’s anything I can help with. (My daughter is a junior at the U, with @Twoin18 's daughter, double majoring in ballet and psychology).
Not us… wondering if there were not that many out of staters that did… if you did get it let us know. I know the fact that you studs have not makes me feel better for my kid.
My kid didn’t receive any emails about Eccles even though he applied. Not sure what, if anything, that means.
My son also has not heard about the Eccles Scholarship. When did your son receive the email?
It was Friday at 1:27 PM to her utah email address.
We got the same email. No Eccles here.
Ours doesnt either, also OOS, and was awarded a scholarship
I am getting concerned and am hoping I am misreading but it appears they have a ton of fees that aren’t included in the base tuition. I ran a tuition estimate for one semester based on 16 credit hours, non resident, math major and honors college and it was $16445 for one semester and I am not confident that even included all the fees. I used their tuition estimator and put in classes: one history, two math, one economics, and one English. There seems to be extra fees for every class when I looked at the schedule for spring classes $400-500 per class! Then if you are in the business college, engineering, or nursing there are even more extra fees per credit hour! The scholarships are looking even less impressive. Here is the link for the tuition estimator: https://student.apps.utah.edu/uofu/stu/tuition-estimator/estimate/1214
There are additional fees for individual classes. Typically these are $16 per class for in person lectures, though there is a supplement (I think $50, it was waived during the pandemic) for online classes. Some bundle books and course material in and then the cost is more like $50-$80. Lab fees can add more, I think chemistry labs are about $100 per lab. I think the most expensive fees for D are the live music accompaniment for ballet which is just over $300 per semester for all classes combined. That’s a one off fee applied to her major, I’m not sure but there may be a similar supplement for some programs like business.
Where some confusion may arise in looking at the catalog is that courses with a number below 1000 are non-credit courses (often directly equivalent to a credit course with a zero added to the end). The fees for these are much higher because you don’t pay for (or receive) the actual credits (~$240 for credit for instate and ~$800 for OOS).
So as an example MATH 121 is the non-credit Calc 1 course whereas MATH 1210 is the for credit version. In MATH 121 you pay $525 in fees, whereas in MATH 1210 you pay $12 in fees (but will pay $960 in instate tuition for the 4 credits) for the exact same lecture from the same instructor (with both types of students in the same class). You might ask why these non-credit versions exist, it is because some non-degree students may take them, also some students don’t need the credits so taking the non-credit version is actually cheaper. For example, D also took a pointe class non-credit one semester because she already had the pointe credits needed and it was good practice for the performance. Because she had a conflict that prevented her from attending one day a week she couldn’t take it for credit anyway.
Thanks that is helpful. Then the $16445 should be about right because I only put in classes with four numbers. I need to run it again as a resident as a comparison since my son would need to get residency for his second year.
I think that’s about right, D’s OOS bill would be just over $20K per semester but she does 21-22 credits. You can of course do one fewer course the first year (minimum is 12 credits per semester for full time) and save several thousand dollars each semester. If staying for the summer for residency you can also catch up then (summer is all at in-state rates regardless of status), especially since you can stay in on-campus housing if you take a minimum of one class.
My son just enrolled and paid the enrollment fee. We don’t see anywhere for him to officially accept his President’s scholarship he was offered. Does anyone know whether he needs to do anything to officially accept the offer or was it automatically accepted when he enrolled? Thanks.
Under the scholarship tab, it states “When a scholarship is ready for your action, it will appear on this page. You can choose to Accept or Decline the offer. You must respond to all offers.” But I do not see anything in there for him to “Accept.” Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
My recollection is that the accepting of scholarships in the online system is done separately but can happen much later. IIRC D didn’t formally do that confirmation until June or July because she didn’t notice it at the time.
Yeah we did not see anything there either. My son paid the enrollment fee as well. I figure scholarships will be there later.
Got this message from office of FA…
“The financial aid offer letter only shows the federal financial aid. We will later post the scholarship amounts onto the financial aid status.”
Did any of your kids register for housing today? Just wondering how it went. My son registers tomorrow.
Yes, my daughter registered today for Kahlert Village Engineering Floor. Remember that the registration time is Mountain Time. So, in CA it was an hour earlier than the assigned time. At your registration time, the room selection page will show up so refresh the housing page at that time. Once it does, you can choose the building, filter by room type, and select your room. Good luck!
I have been lurking here for awhile. My kid also got the Presidential. However, while waiting to hear, she got a good merit offer at another school she prefers so Utah is now out of the running. A pity. Had the timing been different, they’d have built more momentum.
Thanks for the information! It sounds like it went smoothly so hopefully it will tomorrow for my son! We are in the East so it will be two hours later here.
