University of Utah Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

We’re trying to figure out the class registration process, dates, etc. My son is an entering Freshman in the Honors Program. Can someone point me to information, webinar, counselor, etc.? Thanks.

Has anyone received an interview for the Eccles Scholarship?

Most if not all the folks who have posted in this forum about ECCLes were turned down for interviews on Friday and Monday. All interview decisions were mailed Monday according to the Honors college. Please let us know if you all did get one… starting to think that it was mostly in state folks that got it.

If I remember correctly your son was the figure skater I figure if any of us had a chance it would be him… what a great story.

Thank you. He has skated in their beautiful 2002 Olympic rink. US Figure Skating has high level competitions there in the Fall when things are normal. It’s still a top choice for him.

Have him check his U of Utah email account. Either a rejection or prompt to schedule an interview should be there.

He didn’t get it.
I was able to get in the U mail.
Thanks

Can you pay tuition, room and board with a credit card? I’ve read that some schools charge you an extra fee to use a card.

Yes. There’s a flat $3 charge per transaction. Not based on a percentage fee so it’s a great deal for point earning.

That’s good to know!

Our son got his housing slot…on the 19th, ugh. He is really hoping for a single room but I’m thinking he should start looking at roommates just in case. Good luck to everyone in our same boat :grimacing: :grimacing:

You might want to join the U of U Parent Facebook page. A lot of current parents said that housing for freshmen will work out in the end because Utah does housing before students have to commit. Have you visited? We are flying out for a quick trip and touring on Monday.

I’m in the group that thinks there are a significant number of dorm rooms that will become available as students pick other schools. My D has a single in Kalhert for example, but she is 50/50 at best.

Agree that things move around very quickly. D has been trying to shuffle to end up with her friends after a “random” took the spare room in their apartment. I think the slots open up as soon as you cancel. So those wanting a better room will need to check frequently. Or you could perhaps coordinate between yourselves on here to free up at a specific time?

What options are you looking at other than Utah?

I have a quick question about gaining residency. I understand that the student cannot be out of Utah for more than 29 days in a 365-day period. However, I also heard that being enrolled full-time at the University of Utah for a semester is proof that the student was in Utah during that time. My question is whether a day out of Utah here and there during the semester counts toward those 29 days. For example, if the student decides to drive home to a different state on a Friday and returns to school the following Sunday, does that Saturday where the student is in the other state count toward the 29 day allotment?

In theory it does, in practice it may or may not be spotted. Certainly spring and fall break are closely scrutinized.

Generally you have to submit bank statements as proof of physical presence, so using your debit card at an out-of-state location during the weekend could prompt closer examination. I’ve mentioned before that some people apparently leave their debit card with a trusted friend and ask them to use it at vending machines, parking meters, etc.

Maybe check with the residency department but some Utah parents have said travel days count towards residency.

The day you leave and the day you return do count for residency. But if you leave on Friday and return on Sunday then that’s one day out of state.

Thanks for the info. I saw your earlier comment on leaving debit cards, but I think we’d prefer to do it by the book - it’s just one year. We live in Boise, Idaho, so it’s only a 4-5 hour drive to SLC and it would be nice if our son could come home for a weekend now and then. Looks like he could just leave early Saturday morning and return Sunday evening without using one of his 29 days so maybe we’ll plan on that. Thanks again for the info.

Yes. The easiest way to have proof of presence is to buy gas before leaving the state and then again when you get back into Utah.
