I was worried because when I did the tuition calculator I also got an extra $8000 class differential on top of tuition. I emailed financial aid about it and it was a glitch.
Here’s the FA office response:
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are correcting this glitch in our tuition estimator system as we speak, and it will be updated by May 1.
Please re attempt the estimator late next week—as the correct figures should be applied to the program by then. Or, use the rate schedules from your program that are posted on our site. They have been updated already:
We received both verbal and written confirmation that enrolling in an online course at a Utah CC for Summer 2021 will count toward residency next year even if the student does the course from another state - no need to physically be in Utah. They said this is just one of the few benefits of COVID. SLCC has online courses beginning on May 17, and ending on August 7. I think the days between August 7 and August 19 - the date students can move into their U housing - will count toward the 29 out of state days for the year, which means they will have spent 11 of their 29 days before Fall classes start. That means they will have 18 more days they can be out of Utah from August 19, 2021 - May 17, 2022. We feel confident enough about this information that my son enrolled in a 1.0 credit online class at SLCC for the summer, with the hope that he will not need to spend next summer in Utah. We’ll see what happens.
Check out UCrew. It’s a volunteering opportunity where students move into the dorms a few days early and then help with move in. The original request was part of the housing selection, but if you email housing they will open that back up for you to sign up.
For anyone who is still following this thread, we just heard from the scholarship department that if our son takes an online college course this summer in order to obtain residency earlier, he will lose his President’s Scholarship for this fall because he will no longer be considered a first-year student. Just a heads up if anyone else is in the same boat.
Thank you for the information. My daughter plans on attending the U as a freshmen next year. We are out-of-state. Curious about criteria for President’s Scholarship. My daughter has 4.0UW GPA & 4.6 Weighted with a 34 ACT and several EC’s. Think she is in the ball park?
She is likely in the ballpark. Note that the auto-merit scholarships do not appear to consider ECs. Pre-pandemic they were strictly based on GPA and ACT and 4.0/34 would have received the 4 year full tuition scholarship. This year they have widened the pool of Presidential OOS scholarships and changed the amounts so overall it is slightly better than full tuition but only if you stay and get residency after the first year. This year the merit criteria were based on GPA plus class rigor (full IB or what appears to be 8-10 APs) instead of ACT. It’s unclear if ACT will be considered next year or not.
But don’t hold out much hope for Eccles, as it now seems all but impossible to win as an OOS student.
Twoin18 knows way more than I do about the scholarships, so I would listen to her/him first. I will say that your daughter’s numbers are similar to what my son had, and he received the OOS President’s Scholarship this year. The one other point I will make is that it seems like you had to have a 4.0 unweighted GPA to be considered for the President’s Scholarship this year regardless of your unweighted GPA. That’s just something I surmised from this blog, but I feel pretty confident that is true.
The Presidential OOS scholarship covers $20,000 for tuition and $5000 towards a dorm room this coming year and then if you get residency it covers $12,000 tuition and $5000 towards a dorm room. The first year of being OOS would still leave you with $10,000-$12,000 tuition and the rest of room and board.
If either parent is/was in the military and has a DD 214 the student can get in state tuition the first year with minimal paperwork. We learned about his on the parent Facebook page and so I relooked at it and my son applied and was granted in state status within about a week!! We didn’t think we qualified since my husband is still in the Army Reserves but he has bee activated several times so had a DD 214.
The other big thing is to apply for housing by the priority date even if your student hasn’t formally accepted their spot. There is a non refundable $130 fee to do that but if you wait until the May first deadline to accept and then apply for housing there will be a long waitlist. Luckily the other two universities my son was considering didn’t open housing applications until after May 1st so we weren’t out any money.
I’m not doubting you were told this, but I’ve emailed this question twice and called once and all 3 times FA told me it was fine to take a class at SLCC over the summer prior to enrolling this Fall.
Did you talk to anyone in the scholarship department? The person we talked to was adamant that this was a “no-no” as she put it. She said that regardless of what anyone told us about gaining residency, a student’s scholarship would be forfeited if he/she enrolled in a summer course this summer before attending next Fall. My son dropped his SLCC online course yesterday (last day to drop the class) based upon this information. I will be so upset if we received bad information.
No, that is the same office we contacted. My wife just called again, and another individual told us the same thing we heard yesterday. This individual told us that she has worked for the Scholarship and Financial Aid office for 15 years and the information she is giving us has always been the same - you cannot enroll in a college course at another college after graduating from high school without negating your Fall first-time student scholarship. It’s certainly possible that she is missing some sort of change because of the pandemic, but at this point I guess we can’t chance it. Can you post a copy of the email confirmation you received?
AlwaysMoving - Thank you for the messages. We received a similar email response to the one you received, as well as a gracious apology for the misinformation we received earlier. Bottom line is that because summer is an optional semester, it does not affect scholarship eligibility. Luckily, my son was able to re-enroll in his SLCC class so we are back on track for him to obtain residency next May. Thanks. again.
