My son was also accepted. I think there is a General Scholarship form on their website.
Freshman merit scholarships (Excellence, Commendation, etc.) are based on the application you’ve already submitted (generally GPA/rigor based) and this year will come out on March 1.
There are some additional major-specific scholarships listed at https://utah.academicworks.com/ which require separate applications/essays, most with a Feb 1 deadline (though not all are available to freshmen, and many are need-based - it is also unclear whether priority will be given to instate students).
Eccles applications will be available once Honors admissions have been announced on Feb 1 (only Honors students can apply) and will be due mid Feb.
Do you happen to know what SAT and GPA range it takes to get the Eccles Scholarship?
It appears they award about only 25. My son is from Pennsylvania and has a 1570 SAT and 4.0. He is a national level figure skater and has competed at their Olympic rink three different times. Thanks.
D21 accepted for Pre-CS. No email or letter yet. Are those coming this afternoon?
No piggybank icon that we can see in her portal.
That would be in the range. It is then mostly about ECs, plus the essay and interview performance. They want to construct a cohort with different backgrounds and subjects. In past years around one third of the scholarships were awarded to OOS students.
Another shout out for Fort Lewis. in Durango. My son is current student and loves it. Mtn biking all around town is also off the hook.
They are also a WUE school so, for those of us in the West, it is a pretty good value.
S21 from DC/Northern Virginia admitted for Pre-Games. Very proud and excited for him. Great school and program, but wow is it a long way from home. I suspect he will give Utah serious consideration. We need to get out for a visit.
He received both email and text notices.
S21 admitted. He never got an email about signing up for a portal. How does he get on it? We are in MA so far away but he is considering Utah as they have a good game design program and he loves to ski.
Son was admitted and also offered a spot in Business Scholars. Two questions:
(1) when do we find out if they are awarded the WUE scholarship (His portal has nothing about finances)
(2) does anyone have experience with Business Scholars that they can share?
My son was admitted to Business Scholars as well, sounds like a great program and his email says $12K for year 1 that is incremental to merit. Did I read that correctly. I don’t think we hear about WUE or other merit until March 1.
I listened to an admission presentation Thursday night and they said Merit awards will go out in March.
Acceptance packages went out in the mail, and from what I understand, directions for setting up a portal will be in those.
Thank you!
My child’s acceptance was silent about the business scholar program. Where can info about the Bus Scholar application result be found. Thanks
my son got a separate email to his personal email acct.
My son received a separate email for his Business Scholars acceptance
Can students get direct admits to CS?
We are hoping to get out to the U from California to at least look at the campus and get a feel for the area in the next month.
I would really appreciate any tips for things that we should try to do or see from anyone with experience with the school.
We are really extremely covid aware (haven’t gone anywhere or eaten in a restaurant since last March), but I feel that this is an essential trip since my son is so interested in the CS with EAE concentration program at the school and I can’t have him decide between Utah and the UCs without ever seeing Utah. Such a frustrating year in so many ways!
Thank you for any suggestions!
At this time of year the weather is hard to predict, it could be bright and sunny or snowing in the mountains and raining in the city. Though smog is common in winter too, so it can be nicer in the mountains.
It takes a long time to walk around the campus (2-3 hours), especially going uphill when you aren’t used to the altitude, but don’t miss the spectacular view from the top of campus. The bridge between upper and lower campus has a great view, but climbing up the hill behind campus is even better.
If you can’t go inside anywhere on campus then I would make sure you visit the downtown area around Temple Square. And outside SLC, the ~30 min drive to Park City makes for a good outing and give a good idea of how easy it is to get to the ski slopes. Most things are open in Utah, including restaurants, malls etc, unlike California.
Twoin18 is an expert and our son has just 1 semester at Utah but I can chip in a couple pieces.
1, Utah in general is VERY lax with COVID awareness and COVID informed behaviors. We about fainted when we dropped our son off in August and saw large groups visiting in restaurants without masks in site. This weekend we saw that movie theatres are open. Having just driven our son back, the small communities outside SLC seem to have even more COVID denial. Idaho was even worse if you can imagine.

Ask to meet with someone from CS. My son got to visit with a staff member from the Honors College and felt much better about attending Utah after the visit.

The campus is very pretty and you will enjoy the walk but as Twoin18 mentioned, it is a big campus that is mostly on hills. Many of the facilities are new and flashy and the mountains above campus are very pretty. Weather is all over the place. It was 50 and sunny and just gorgeous Saturday and it snowed today.

If you end up going let me know and I’m sure my son could find a spot to meet your son (outside and safe).
