Thanks @Twoin18! Very helpful information.
Great info. Tracking for D20.
S OOS accepted Pre-Games. 3.9 WGPA. 1250 SAT/26 ACT. Amazing ECs in jazz and robotics. WUE scholarship. Snow boarder— so giving strong consideration. Waiting on UCs.
Hoping for any insight on scholarships at UofU…
I called the financial aid office and the person who answered the phone couldn’t get me an exact answer so I’m hoping someone had/has the same situation as I do…
Som just got accepted this week and made it into the business scholars and honors program. Business scholars offered a $36,000 scholarship, the admission offered a $32,000 merit scholarship, the honors program did not offer and financial scholarships, and I’m also from a WUE state… I’m pretty sure I cannot combine my 2 scholarships but can I defer them? I plan on moving to Utah and establishing residency which would mean I would be able to pay instate tuition years 2-4… can I then take advantage of the scholarships at that point? Or is there a better way to navigate this situation?
Any insight would be appreciated…
@123tocollege D also accepted Pre-Games and honors program. She was offered non resident President’s scholarship. Eccles Scholarship at honors college seems better (cover room and board and $400 book). Can D apply for it?
@zzd857 Yes, any accepted Honors student can apply and it would replace your existing scholarship (it’s now live, including the deadlines at https://honors.utah.edu/admissions/eccles-distinguished-scholarship/, note the reference to interview dates means some time in mid-March, there’s about a week of dates to choose from). It’s worth about $4000-$5000 more per year than the Presidential scholarship (note that you would spend a bit on food because the meal plan doesn’t cover all meals, but otherwise virtually all costs are covered). About half of the 30 spots go to OOS students.
@shrek99 I assume the business scholars scholarship is the one you’d take. It is unclear if that is tied to non-resident status like the general freshman scholarship, but it may well be. So that’s the key question to understand. Aren’t the terms included with your offer, they should look something like this: https://financialaid.utah.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/freshman/terms/2019-20/FAANR2.pdf (which are the terms for your general $32,000 merit scholarship and state specifically it only lasts until you get residency)? So I’m not sure what the relevance of deferral would be, you get 1/4 of the stated amount per year. Residency is a better deal after year 1 (much more than a $8000 or $9000 per year saving).
Dumb question, but if you apply after December 1st, can you still get merit aid?
@equationlover In theory you can, but in practice there may not be any money left, particularly amongst the higher level awards. Not sure about the more limited first year awards, but you might also have to wait for any award instead of it coming with admission.
@Twoin18 Thank you. I didn’t realize with my family’s financial situation we wouldn’t be able to afford good loans, so I’m in a tight situation. Thankfully I applied to two need-meet schools. I will try and see what happens. Maybe I should contact Utah first to see if they even would consider it?
@Twoin18 Thanks for the information!
@Twoin18 thanks for the info… yeah it’s all making sense now. So if I’m reading this correct, can he still apply for the honors scholarship and either that provides more or can stack onto his other?
And yes all his were “non-resident” so what you said makes absolute sense… since they weight the Business Scholars scholarship heavy for the first year (18k) it would make sense to accept that one, gain residency his first year and then hopefully qualify for in state after that… we might be able to afford it if that works!
@shrek99 Are you referring to the Eccles scholarship (most other Honors scholarships are for existing students)? He can certainly apply and it would replace the existing scholarship if he wins it. It is a holistic selection process, though the typical stats of winners are pretty high (generally top 1%), the comparison expressed to us last year was that it was a better choice than attending UC Berkeley.
Regardless, it sounds like the Business Scholars is a good bet, $18K would cover the OOS tuition & fees premium, and then as you say you would plan to get residency for subsequent years by staying for the summer after freshman year, as many other OOS students do (and is encouraged by the U).
Congrats!
My daughter has yet to receive any mail from the U of U regarding acceptance and scholarship offer - nothing in today’s mail. Her two friends that applied received letters on Monday and Tuesday of this week - we are in AZ. She is starting to worry about why she hasn’t gotten anything. Her stats are such that we are fairly sure she will get some kind of scholarship offer (based on what her friends were offered and the NPC). It seems strange but I guess mail can get held up. I might have her call if she doesn’t get anything tomorrow.
@sdscoutmom we are also from CA (Tustin) and our daughter received the WUE which is what we wanted!! She is a direct admit into Engineering, still deciding on either CS with Games, or Mechanical Engineering. Visiting the school next week, Jan 24/25.
She plans to try out for Marching Utes (percussion)
Congrats to your family!
@jilywily DD is in the same boat. We have nothing in the mail and portal isn’t showing anything. We never were able to set up umail, so if notifications were sent there, we cannot access. All application materials show received on time…she will call on Monday if nothing in tomorrow’s mail.
@jilywily and @mom2collegekid did you hear anything Saturday or today? Curious, and it might be helpful for future students and parents following along on this thread now or down the road.
It turns out that she made a typo in our street number address! She called the financial aid office on Friday and they told her they would send another letter. She was informed she received the Academic Excellence scholarship. She is really pleased? It’s a desirable safety for her (she loves skiing and mountains) if the reaches/$$$ don’t come through.
UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: 4.7 (or something like that)
SAT: 1540
MAJOR: Engineering - probably mechanical
Lots of APs
NMSF - Likely NMF
@rockmom21 Thank you! Congrats to you too! We are going to visit for the Honors day on February 9th.
Percussion for the band would be great fun! Good luck!
@equationlover My son applied after the 12/1 deadline and did get a $40,000 OOS scholarship ($10,000/year). (Stats: 1360 SAT, 3.9 GPA in a dual credit program, some extracurriculars but nothing crazy). Doesn’t seem like much compared to some of the larger scholarships, but I like that the GPA requirement to keep it is lower.
