University of Vermont Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

They probably realized it was a safety. It is pretty much a safety for my son too but I told him not to take anything for granted and I encouraged him to write the optional essay. I know they definitely track demonstrated interest and we technically never visited for a tour since his brother goes there and we have been many times and know the place inside and out, though I am not sure that Admissions made the connection.

My daughter and one of her best friends were accepted to UVM two years ago. The honors college and 20K scholarship offer came with their letters of acceptance.

accepted for nursing
4.0 weighted gpa, test optional, met with uvm admissions counselor at high school, decent ECs, part-time job, 16000 merit. Not bad for test optional
my older daughter got only 1000 more when she applied to liberal arts with a 4.3 and submitted 1330 SATs. She never met with her admissions counselor though, and we are wondering how important it is to demonstrate interest. She has a 32K efc due to having a sister who is also in college
do you think UVM will provide any other assistance? Right now the tuition is at 41K and a bit high

Having a second child in college will help to lower your EFC (although this is apparently the last year due to changes in the FASFA for next year), however that number should have been reflected in your EFC for this year if you filled it out correctly. I have a son at UVM and while he did receive a need based grant, I found that his total package left a $10K gap every year and we had to take out the Parent Plus loan to bridge it. For this reason, I have been encouraging my younger son to apply to colleges that meet full need, although these schools use the CSS profile which takes home equity in to account, so it might just even out in the end. FYI, we actually appealed my son’s financial aid package this year due to Covid related income loss and discovered that we had actually filled out the FASFA incorrectly the year prior by not including the right amount of dependants. Unfortunately, it was too late for that year but we were able to get a very small increase in his grant. Because the FASFA is based on income two years prior if you had a reduction in the year prior you may be able to appeal. You have to wait until you get your offer to negotiate. The FA rep was extremely helpful.

D22 from elite school, APs, strong GPA last 3 years
deferred. Classmate got deferred, accepted full ride UConn, accepted Harvard EA. She’s validictorian.

I was surprised but reminded D22 that admissions are not personal, they’re like an acting audition. You may be amazing but they want someone shorter with red hair and freckles and a silly faux French accent. We visited, had demonstrated interest, great essays. It’s not his top choice but we thought it was a solid likely. Really try not to take it personally. It’s not a reflection on you.

I read WSJ that the ivies that report had record ED apps. Asked friend in admissions at NYU
she said lots of schools are deferring to spring because COVID grades are hard to rely on, they want to see Fall semester grades especially test optional, and with COVID they may have to admit fewer total students. Not a normal year by far.

Sounds like maybe some yield protection too. High achieving kids, and may have seemed unlikely to attend. I’m sorry your daughter is disappointed, and I hope she gets the news she wants in the spring. Guessing she will have amazing options!

Oh, our daughter was accepted too! We live in Northern California and have not yet been to the UVM campus (in fact she’s never been to Vermont!)

Funny, we too live in northern ca and our D22 was accepted at Fordham and UVM. We had a tour of Rose Hill this summer but didn’t make it up to Vermont. Congrats to your daughter!!

Oh, nice, congrats to your daughter — our daughter was accepted to Fordham too (Lincoln Center)! Fun to think about East Coast adventures for them!

As some other people earlier in the thread, we got deferred, which was quite unexpected. The GPA/SAT numbers are somewhat higher than the average but nowhere close to suggest that UVM is a safety school. We did not visit the campus but wrote an optional essay, which we thought was a clear indication of interest. Someone in the thread mentioned that college admissions are similar to “acting audition” but does not it appear that with the nearly 80% EA acceptance rate the admissions to UVM is something completely opposite of acting auditions: UVM admissions is effectively a “rejection” process (reject 2 out of 10) while acting auditions are a “selection” process (select 1 out of many). Not sure how one can have somewhat above average numbers (extracurriculars and everything else are fine) and end up being deferred.

Does anyone know whether deferred candidates who get admitted later count toward the 80% EA acceptance rate? Thanks.

I don’t believe the 80% reflects those later accepted in the regular decision pool as a result of being deferred. Those acceptances would be reflected in the regular admission acceptance rate. I think that 80% acceptance in EA will be reduced next year. My daughter was also deferred in Dec despite having stats that made UVM a target school. She has a few friends in the same boat and has yet to hear of any acceptances at her school. She has gotten into schools that were more of a reach for her and has been given merit from all but one of her acceptances. It is sad but UVM has fallen way down her list after being a top contender.

Same here! UVM was a good target school and he’s been accepted to all other EA schools with merit scholarships.

Thanks soarfeet. It seems we will be moving on to some other options. Perhaps, this is UVM’s way to shake off applicants with no strong interest, but even if it were our first choice, the loss in momentum is not good for morale.

I also don’t believe the numbers were 80% the past few years. That goes for overall acceptance rates also, last year was 63% instead of the 71% that’s published. It seems like UVM is becoming more selective.

Agree. My older son just graduated UVM in December and my younger son just got in EA. It was his safety, but I told him not to be too complacent because you never know I have heard of many kids getting deferred EA this year, including the daughter of a coworker who applied to many of the same schools as my son (they both got into another school EA). I do think that they are becoming more selective. UVM has gotten very popular in recent years. I have noticed that every year since my older son was admitted that the acceptance rate has gotten lower. I think a lot of kids apply there EA now and they are probably just trying to hold enough spots for the RD pool.

To clarify - 2021 Common dataset (available on UVM’s website) lists 13240 accepted out of 18564 applied, which corresponds to 71% acceptance rate last year - are you saying that Common dataset is not accurate?

My Son got admitted to the Business School EA, >4.0 weighted but didn’t submit SAT scores as it wouldn’t help or hurt. Got 18k per year in merit $. But I’m an Alumni so if it might be it’s a yield play. It’s his top choice so it’s working out for him.
