University of virginia vs Notre dame university.

Hi All, My D wishes to persue her undergrad degree in business. She has been granted admission to Notre dame ( direct admit to Mendoza) and also reced an admission from the university of Virginia. Would like an opinion on which of the above she should consider. Cost not being a factor of consideration with an emphasis on quantity of education and undergrad repute of the collegeShe is an international student ,hence is concerned with the lack of diversity at notre dame but loves the school all the same. Moreover the university of Virginia does not offer a direct admit to their busiiness school which is a factor odd consideration. Any advice is welcome and appreciated ,thank you

The Commerce School’s website has detailed information on the admission process, and stats on accepted students. A student applies during their second year, after taking 3 Comm School classes in their first 2 years.

One of the nice advantages of UVa for an international student is that it is so accessible to all the major east coast cities by Amtrak. Many international students like to visit DC, Phil, NYC, etc., particularly if they have friends or relatives in those areas. There is a commuter train that runs from South Bend to Chicago.

I’d also look at the required classes at Notre Dame. Some Catholic universities have a number of required religious-oriented classes. For some people that is great. For others, they would prefer to have been able to take other classes.

Thanks for your input @Charliesch.

My D’s roommate had excellent grades, etc., but did not get in to the business school at UVA and had to transfer. It was very stressful waiting to hear and then tough to have to transfer.

Thanks @BeachMom21 !

If you have the brainpower to be accepted to UVa as an international student, you probably have the brainpower to have a very good chance of making the cut at the Comm School. Just keep in mind that the Comm School does look for some other facets beyond GPA, as described on their website.

In any case, there are hundreds of first-year students each year that start out intending to go to the Comm School, and then they develop other academic interests that fit them better.

WSJ list of feeders schools shows them close. LinkedIn list of bank feeders is also close. Access to transportation is important. My kid lost ten days of school flying around to job interviews. On a personal note, philosophy and religion were much more challenging than any business class for my children. The UVA network is very good. ND alums are soul mates.

I had 2 family members that got into UVA OOS and could not get into Comm School once there.

All things being equal, it is preferable to go to college near where you eventually want to work. As noted above, it will save time and expense on job hunting and interviews, and also it will take advantage of the regional alum network. If you want to work in the midwest, Notre Dame would have a stronger network, while UVa would have a larger alum network along the east coast.

Alumni edge in Chicago goes to ND. Alumni edge in DC goes to UVA.

NYC is probably about even,

Thanks ffor your valuable imput @Charliesch , @Burgermeister ,@chb088 & @northwesty !
