Sorry, I should have been clearer. The $29K merit aid was for the private school where he applied. I was just pointing out that the FAFSA was necessary to receive aid at some colleges.
I heard back today
My daughter was admitted but not DA to Foster. I am inclined to agree with you about passing on it because of the no DA aspect but curious to ask why you say that just in case itâs a reason other than the obvious â which it seems like a brutal process to transfer in.
I got into the honors program just today, not sure how/when the decisions are being released though
I am not saying folks should pass if they are not DA, rather itâs about being realistic about how competitive and challenging the standard admission path is.
There may also be some additional courses that a student needs to take to pursue a primary and a backup major.
Several folks commented that âyou just need to be willing to put in the workâ, etc which underestimates the effort required.
If a student loves UW, is willing and ready to put in the work, and has a backup path to a different major it might be worth it to them.
Howâd you hear?
Did you learn of purple and gold through the portal or physical acceptance packet? Thanks. No indication in the portal.
We didnât realize that we scheduled our tour for the first day of finals week. Campus was sparsely populated, so unfortunately, we didnât really get a campus vibe. But our tour guide was great, and she shared that it is usually bustling. We got the feeling that kids who attend UW take advantage of clubs, watching sports, and the outdoor activities in the area (skiing, hiking, etc.). My D liked the campus (except the modern buildings) and the U District. Spring quarter starts 3/28, so I would suggest going that date or later to get a real feel of the vibe.
@jojoburrito - my D heard via an email from UW Honors titled UW Honors Admissions Letter. The email contained links to accept the honors invite and to accept offer of admission. The deadline for both is 5/1, so I would guess that if offers are declined, they can make more offers? They said they received 5,800 apps for 225 spots. I donât recall whether UW is one of the schools where students can also apply after enrolling, so that would be something to find out if a student wasnât accepted into honors but would like to be.
@LearningMore1 - my D learned of P&G through portal on 3/4. She still hasnât received a physical packet. (Weâre oos.)
Yes I also heard via an email from UW Honors that said I had been accepted into the honors program and gave me a link to accept. You can apply to the honors program as an already enrolled student at UW, so itâs not only for entering freshman.
Thanks! Just got the email too
just got the honors email !! im low-income out of state so im pretty sure i wonât be attending but this was really cool to get !!
Thanks
We have a (good) problem on our hands today. D22 got admitted into both UW and UCLA (last night) and I do not know how to compare UW with UCLA, the no. 1 ranked public university in the U.S. We are OOS to both, so that is not a criteria. Any insight from anyone?
Both are same costs? Same major?
Yes, same major, same costs.
Have you visited both campuses? Direct admit into his major at UW? Preference for weather/location? Could you list major?
You can see from my label there is no need to visit UW. And there is no time between no and May 1 to visit LA.
The competitive majors at UW, which I know all about as I lived through it myself, is leaving me a bit cold for my D22. Two years as a pre-sciences major at UW and you might have to transfer to some lesser school to get a different degree if you for whatever reason do not get into your competitive major as a junior. Every online video posted by current Dawgs talks about this issue.
UCLA seems to have a different system. Is UW the only flagship that runs this competitive major system?
UCB also has some competitive majors which require secondary admission criteria.
Only reason I am asking about major is that the UCLA Forum Champion @10s4life is a current UCLA graduate in EE and has a wealth of knowledge about the Engineering programs. You might want to send a PM and ask some specific questions about UCLA.
Iâm having similar feelings. My D22 doesnât need to worry about getting into a competitive major but she needs to worry about having a high enough GPA in the premed Bio, Chem and Physics classes to be competitive for med school. Weâre on our way to admitted students visit at Purdue which doesnât have that weed out atmosphere but UW is our state flagship and has an amazing department for her major (Philosophy).
