My top choice is UW, but I got literally NO financial aid, not a penny of the pell grant. Since I live in CA I knew I would get less, but since my family makes less than 50k a year for 3 people, and the school is 43k, we assumed I would get a little. Does anyone know why I wouldn't have gotten any? Or if talking to the financial aid office would even have the possiblity of helping?

Because they reserve most aid for residents?

I don’t think UW participates in WUE. What was your EFC?

I know they give most aid to residents. That was implied when I said I knew that I wouldn’t get as much. My EFC was $5,000 an I didn’t even get federal aid, which is supposed to go to people from all states, even if they’re going to another state for school

If your EFC was zero, you would have gotten $5,500 in Pell.
Looks like your EFC needs to be lower than$5,000, to receive anything.
Were you offered Pell from any of your other schoolsT.

With an EFC of $5000, you’re not eligible for a Pell grant for 2012-13.

Here’s the current eligibility chart:

http://www.northweststate.edu/Current_Students/Financial_Aid/pdfs/Pell_Schedule.pdf

I didn’t apply to any other out of state schools, but I got Cal grants. Why do you not receive aid from the pell if you can’t even pay an 8th of the fees as determined by fafsa, that seems ludicrous to me

The maximum EFC to receive Pell is $4,898.
I’m glad you have more affordable options. It must be frustrating.

Most public schools rarely ever give money to out of state students because all of the money in aid is reserved for IN STATE students.

The reason public schools charge so much more for out of state is because they want your money. Public schools take international and out of state students so they can get more money from you as opposed to in state kids who are paying 20K a year.

It’s not like a private where they give aid when you have a low EFC, public schools have a very limited budget when it comes to financial aid.

U of W doesn’t give much money to anyone in state or out - Washington is not trying to attract bright kids from out of state - we have those - they are trying to attract money from out of state.
