University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

D did a walk-in for the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point (BFA) MT program. She really enjoyed the audition and the faculty. Does anyone have any current information feedback on the program? Thanks.

@PrettySharpMom My D has a friend who is a freshman at UWSP in BFA Acting. She added UWSP to her list on the recommendation of a dance instructor/director/performer, a BFA MT alum who is successfully supporting herself. She auditioned for BFA MT very late in the season last year and was redirected to Acting. We were surprised by that, because this girl is a very talented and experienced triple threat. As I recall, UWSP only took 5 girls for MT, so maybe her late audition was a factor, but that’s just a guess on my part. She accepted the Acting redirect for a number of reasons: She wanted a traditional campus environment within several hours’ driving distance from home; their Acting majors can audition for the musicals; and UWSP is extremely affordable. She can take dance classes and voice lessons at an additional fee, which is not a problem because her tuition and housing costs are so low. She is very happy there! She has had only one Gen Ed class each semester. She was cast in a staged reading of a play last semester and had a tech assignment she really enjoyed (lighting). This semester, she was cast in the ensemble for the musical and is understudy for one of the leads. Just be aware that they do get a LOT of snow there!

Thank you @upstaged for taking the time and for your kind reply. She is used snow as she grew up in a very cold/snowy New England town. She seemed to remember the faculty mentioning a limited number of students (16) selected for MT hopefully someone out there has auditioned or perhaps has visited the campus. It just seems like a nice “hidden gem.” ?‍♀️

@PrettySharpMom my D did a walk-in as well and enjoyed her audition with the school. Have you heard anything from them yet?

Hi @PNWdrama, my D has not yet heard anything from UWSP either. Glad to know that your D also enjoyed meeting with them. D did call the admissions dept to make sure that all items were received two days after she submitted her application they said all was good. We are waiting for 9 schools hopefully she will hear soon! BAL to your D!

By end of March is what I heard for UWSP to notify decisions

FWIW, My D did a walk-in at Chicago Unifieds last year and really liked them. They seem like a hidden gem and they were easily the cheapest place we applied to. Last March we were notified she was an alternate for both the BFA MT and BFA Acting. Not sure if they also had a waitlist or not. It was hard to find much info on the program besides their official stuff. D talked to a student on Facebook but still had a lot of questions. Unfortunately, we couldn’t swing a visit after all the audition traveling.

Sometime in April we got a message saying a BFA Acting spot had opened up and the first person to reply to the email would get it. I thought that was a bit odd and we couldn’t see who else was on the email. My D had already committed somewhere else so we didn’t pursue it.

They really need to up their public profile because they seem very promising.

Both of my students auditioned there at Unifieds and really enjoyed it!! It does seem to be a hidden gem. Not too hidden, because Andrew Cao and Laura Osnes attended there! But it definitely had not been on our radar…They haven’t gotten decisions yet, but we will see…

It is a wonderful town and school (I grew up there). The town is very supportive of the university and the arts. There is a symphony orchestra and a lot of craftpeople in town. There are outdoor activities just steps from the campus, and last year the Pointers won the DIII hockey championship.

And there is beer.

It’s also the university that Patrick Rothfuss graduated from and taught at and he still lives there if any of you/your kids are fans of his novels.

@mindatwork Oh goodness!! That’s my husband’s favorite author! And his favorite book series (and my son’s as well!) (Name of the Wind). I heard Lin Manuel Miranda was supposed to be doing something with the Name of the Wind series!

D auditioned in Chicago for MT. Was asked in audition about Acting redirect. She politely said she was open to it, but not first choice. We were contacted by UWSP acting dept head yesterday reminding us to fill out Acting app on Accepted because D has only filled out MT app for UWSP. They said they would be deliberating next week. This is the opposite area of the country my daughter wants, but I think is a fantastic program from what I read. Will strongly consider if accepted.
