I was hoping someone could shed some light on Penn State's current policy regarding campus placement for incoming freshmen (especially from out-of-state). Is it true that it is next to impossible to gain admission to the University Park campus, and that most acceptances will be to the satellite campuses? Thanks for your insights!

You generally have to be an above-average student. PSU focuses on numerical stats, like GPA and SATs. You have to be pretty strong in both these areas. And with any state college, the admission of OSS is lower compared to ISS.

Thanks so much for the info!

OP - 34% of the PSU main campus incoming freshmen class for this year is from out-of-state (OOS).

apply EARLY!!! Like in September! We are from NY - my daughter is an entering freshman this year - 90 GPA - 28 ACT - lots of ECs, Food Science major - sooooo excited!! Good Luck!

PSU does not differentiate between in-state and out-of-state for admissions; there are fewer students from OOS because fewer apply. (I am sure they are happy to have the OOS tuition dollars!) The overall acceptance rate, according to College Board, is 52% at UP; GPA counts 2/3 in admissions decisions. Caseys5 is right about applying early. There were quite a few posts here last spring from kids who thought PSU-UP was a safety for them, but didn’t apply promptly and were waitlisted.

You will need to apply for the early admission. They have actually set a structure where they accept admissions by batches. I believe the first batch is due before November 30th. Check their website. My daughter, now a Junior, entered through the satellite campus (Hazleton) and quiet frankly it was better for her to adapt to the College scene as the professors got to know the students given the size of the campus. Now at Upark she has all the necessary tools to finish her psychology major.

Good look and keep an eye on those deadlines. btw- we are OOS.

Apply as early as you can and if you’re on the borderline (under a 3.9 weighted GPA and/or mediocre SATs), consider applying for Summer admission. Some of the summer programs for freshmen are really tremendous and applying for summer will help your chances. Plus for freshmen it’s nice to get to know the place a little before 40,000 students arrive at the end of August.

I applied the day the application come out.

GPA: 3.48

Do I have a shot at University Park?

I applied the first day, and the school should get my transcript in about 4 weeks (my school takes a long time to process).
