University Scholarships?

I guess they are sending that out to the EA applicants. When/how do they notify RD applicants of acceptance?

RD applicants get their scholarship offers with their decision notifications.

I got the letter, but it said 10k, not 5.

I’ve been out of town since Saturday so I haven’t been able to check the mail. Got home today to find the scholarship letter :)

My daughter is an EA student but has not accepted yet. If she hasn’t gotten the merit scholarship folder does that mean she won’t get any merit scholarship money?

No letter till today, so does that mean that there is no merit scholarship or are the letters still being mailed out?

can an EA admit, who didn’t apply for merit scholarship in his app, ask for it now?

^ I highly doubt it.

^^ I hope not! I’d be over the moon w/ even 5k…

^^^ Does that mean she was deferred? I believe that any merit scholarship info would come with her acceptance then like for the RD applicants.

I believe she was talking about how her daughter had been accepted EA and had not accepted the offer.

I haven’t accepted the offer either if that helps at all . . .

Since our scholarship application involves little more than putting forth the best application you can and “checking the box” on the application indicating that you’d like to be considered for merit scholarships, there’s no extra work that needs to be done to be considered and, unfortunately, nothing you can do after we notify scholarship recipients to receive one after the fact. If you are an EA admit who has not received a merit scholarship, don’t worry! We traditionally only offer University scholarships to about 100 students, and College Honors scholarships to about 20 students, so, while we love all of you (that’s why we admitted you!) the sad fact is that not everyone is going to receive one. You do not need to have accepted your offer of admission to receive a merit scholarship, and merit scholarships that are offered to students who decide not to attend are not redistributed among other applicants. Also, keep in mind that merit scholarships are separate from financial aid grants and the Odyssey scholarship funds, and you will receive information about your grant award (if any) from the Office of College Aid sometime in the spring.

@UChicagoPSAC: So, if we haven’t received a letter yet, there is no hope?

Did the people who got scholarships get an email notification also, or just US Mail.

There’s no reason to think that only EA applicants will get scholarships, thus there’s hope for the RD applicants.

Just the folder in the mail.

I’m still completely shocked. I was doubtful of my chances of even being accepted, let alone getting a merit scholarship :)

That’s funny. We’ve been having problems with our mail because our regular mail carrier is on vacation so I called the Admissions office and a woman named Crystal said that the notifications would be by email.

Grace?

Looks like I won’t be going to Chicago now.

Thank you for the information. Our son is an EA admit and we were extremely pleased to see that he received a University Honors Scholarship at the $10K level. However, there is still a large gap between this award plus his initial need-based package vs. what we can honestly afford and we hope he can attend his dream school. We have a few questions:

You mentioned that the University offers about 100 of these per year and about 20 College Honors Scholarships (full tuition). Is it possible for a University Honors receipient to get bumped up to the College Honors level? If so, what is the procedure? Or, can we request additional need-based aid?

You mentioned there is a new $5K level for the University Scholarships. Does that mean that there are still a total of 100 awards ($5K and $10K) or did the university expand the total number of awards?

About what proportion of these merit scholarships are awarded to EA admits vs. RD admits?

Thank you!

From our experience 2 years ago the “bumping up” will not happen (boy, did he try). It’s more likely to get a change in your FA.

PSAC, did they hand out the full-ride honor scholarship to some EA admits also? I notice that everyone above mentioned getting the 5 or 10,000 university scholarship, but I am assuming they gave out the full-rides too, but they just didn’t happen to post on CC!
