The EXTREMELY UNOFFICIAL overall acceptance rate for the class of 2014 is 17.6%

I counted up all the people from every state/country via the admitted students site for a total of 3395 acceptances (3190 US, 205 international), and I recall the total number of applications being 19306 seen here: U. of C. sees unprecedented jump in applications - Chicago Breaking News

Wow.
I'd like someone to check my math though. Or we can wait for official stats.

I suggest we wait for the official

I overcounted by 10 from Minnesota and completely skipped the 92 from Virginia, bringing the new unofficial total to 3477 acceptances, or 18.0%.

There will be people taken off the waitlist, though, so that this number will probably jump to about 19-20%.

I counted and got 3373 acceptances for an acceptance rate of 17.5%. I probably miscounted.

I probably miscounted too. I got -5% as the admissions rate.

what’s the admitted students site you guys are mentioning?

By the way, if FightTheTide’s second count is correct, that means that Chicago’s RD acceptance rate was 1801/16630 = 10.8%. That is a pretty damn low figure, isn’t it?

^ I suspect that it’s unusually low because they would (presumably) be careful with the waitlist. I know little about admissions, but I’d be extremely careful with not underestimating yield when applications go up so much (over-enrolling is never fun). It would make sense if they were somewhat cautious with admitting people in RD to avoid problems in the class.

Could some kind soul please post the number of acceptances by state and if available, by country? Thanks!

My interviewer told me that last year, or two years ago, they accepted too many students. Or rather, they accepted an appropriate number of students, but too many ended up matriculating and they had over enrollment. He said that they were going to do their best to avoid that this year. Maybe that would help account for the low admissions rate? And apparently, Chicago’s matriculation rate has been going steadily up, so I’m actually not too surprised at the low rate.
