Unless you're in varsity, does playing sports matter at all in your application?

I am in JV for basketball and spend hours of practice over it, as well as setting the record in individual cross-country race in my school. However, in basketball I am a mediocre player, , and my school does not have a cross-country team, so I simply self-train.

Therefore I don't think I should be filling out an athletic form/inquiry as I don't have a cross-country coach or had proper training, and is not good enough at basketball.
Although my forte is entirely something else, and I don't expect the AOs to be impressed with my sports skills anyway, does even being in JV matter in your application? I expect there to be much more varsity players being recruited for sports.

Due to the firewall in my current school, I am not able to write posts, only post new threads. So thank you in advance if you can answer my question. :)

I don’t know, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

I would say they matter, especially if you are a potential varsity athlete.

Schools are looking the entire breadth of a student’s interests. If you play a sport - even if it’s not varsity - why leave it out? Include if it is a sincere interest (versus activity done to pad a resume).

Do mention your sports participation, even if you are not a varsity/elite/recruited athlete.

Schools want to see that you can do more than just academics. Plus, players are needed for the prep school’s JV and Thirds teams which are feeders for the school’s varsity team.
