UNSCA-Drama Program/Curriculum

Hi, I’m a rising high school senior and a prospective student of School of the Arts and I have a few questions about their drama program. I want to be an actor and my ultimate focus is film & television. Yes, I know most schools will focus on theater.

So, I’ve been looking at their courses and the curriculum doesn’t seem to match up with the descriptions of the program.

“The curriculum also includes more specific skills such as mask, stage combat, verse, singing, dance, and accents and dialects.”

“Your classes will build on previous years’ instruction, further emphasizing the importance of breaking down a script and analyzing character elements, accent and dialects, dance styles, advanced physical comedy, audition techniques, introduction to acting for the camera, and personalizing songs for your voice and acting techniques.”

“In addition, you will participate in master classes including audition workshops, television and film camera techniques, cold readings and résumé preparation taught by theater professionals.”

These descriptions really hooked me and UNSCA is one of my top choices, but all I see in the course list is techniques/acting classes. Do the acting cources involve any of the above descriptions? Like, do students learn those things within the acting classes? Is that why it’s not listed?

My final question. Can drama students act in student films from the filmmaking department?

My daughter is just starting there so I am
Not an expert. I can only tell you what she learned through applying and visiting. The descriptions of the drama classes are spot on. I don’t know how they are listed or categorized in the catalogue, but I know they have mask class, combat class, vocal classes, etc, etc, etc. the training is varied and intense.

I have known other students to act in Student films. So that is a possibility.

Many of their grads work in Film and tv currently.

The school does a great info session before
You audition and they describe all the coursework. If accepted they have a weekend you go visit and they run it just like a couple school days. You do a bunch of classes and workshops Can also stay longer and sit In on classes
I think you will find it has one of the most comprehensive curriculums around. Good luck to you this year.

@mimermaid - after seeing my daughters schedule I can assure you UNCSA drama offers classes in mask, stage combat, dance, singing/voice, acting, speech, etc.

She has drama major classes from mid-late morning through dinner every day. Also a couple classes in the evening through the week. Liberal arts classes are in the morning. Hope that helps

Thank you so much! That clears up a lot for me.
