Unsubsidized Loans & Failure to File Taxes

Hello everyone. I've scoured the internet and failed to find an answer to my question. My question is this: can one be eligible for unsubsidized loans if their parents do NOT file taxes, even though they are required to? Thank you for your time and any insight.

Hmmm. Good question.

To file a FAFSA, you need information from your tax forms, unless you are eligible not to file, then you can fill out a form to attest to that.

I have filed my taxes and would provide the corresponding information. Are you also saying that the same requirement must be met by my parents? Just making sure. Thanks for the swift response.

The key to the above is that the parents need to cease providing any support to the student.

When you complete a FAFSA as a dependent student, the income and assets of your parents are required…and a link to the IRS retrieval tool. If your parent is not required to file, they would need a non-filers statement completed.

Here is a good site that has the info for you, read it all to see if there is any insight for you:

If your parents refuse to file the forms because they haven’t filed a tax return or owe taxes, there isn’t anything you can do. The federal government doesn’t provide financial aid to families of tax evaders and tax protesters.

The bottom line is that failure to file a federal income tax return when required, misreporting the amount of income on a federal income tax return or filing a frivolous income tax return represents conflicting information. Federal student aid cannot be disbursed until the conflict is resolved by filing a complete and accurate federal income tax return.

Thank you for that information. That directly answers my question. Many thanks!
