Unsure about my major (for the 50th time)

I have no idea what I want to major in, and when this term is over I will be completely finished with my gen eds and have a 2-year degree and no idea what to do after. What I enjoy the most is history, but I know getting a “good job” with a history degree isn’t gonna happen, so I’ve decided to minor in it. However, I’ve gone from wanting to do business to medicine to history to psych and I haven’t found anything I’ve really seen myself doing forever. I already took a year and a half off to figure it out, but no luck. Anyone have advice?

At some point you have to pick and move forward. I assume you’ve been to the career center at your CC. If you haven’t spend any time with the “Book of Majors” published by College Board, I’d get a copy from the library or the career center and look through that. Take a pack of post its (2 colors) and mark majors & the related careers as “Fascinating!” or “Maybe interesting…”. See if you have clusters around specific areas.

I guess the one thing I’d say is not to think of it as “forever”. People do change paths and careers sometimes. I was a marketing major, and guess what? I’ve never worked a day in that field in my life. Once you’ve picked something, see if you can get someone to let you shadow in that job for a day to see what it is really like. Try to get an internship in whatever you pick after your next year of college to gain some experience (will help with your job search). Just taking time off and hoping a career finds you isn’t a very productive approach, so I don’t recommend trying that again.

Lots of history majors go to law school, or work in politics somehow. Law school isn’t as lucrative a career as it used to be. But there are still lawyers in the world…

Why don’t you work backwards? What kind of job do you want to have?

Nothing really “speaks to me”, if I had to choose anything it would probably owning my own business or anything else where I could be my own boss, but that’s about it.

Thank you so much! I’m gonna get on that asap.
