Unsure? Pre Med? Similar?

Hi, I am currently an interested high school junior interested in pre med programs, or something of that nature/something in the medical field, and am a little unsure where to start my search. I have heard good reviews about NYU, but am pretty much unsure where i want to go.

I am currently waiting on my second SAT score report, but my first is as follows:
Critical Reading: 610
Math: 650
Writing: 600

I have a GPA of 4.229 and my class rank is 12/427. I am involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including Student Council where I have served as Sophomore Executive and Secretary, and am now serving as President. I am involved in the Spanish Honor Sociey, National Honor Society, and numerous clubs. I am also a boy scout and earned a black belt in Taekwondo. I am also the captain of my high school swim team.

I am currently enrolled in AP/Honors classes, and have recieved straight A's all 3 years of high school, including AP classes.

I have taken:
AP English Language and Comp
AP US History

Honors:
Chemistry
Biology
Algebra
Precalculus

and will also be taking the following next year (senior year)

AP Biology
AP Calculus
Honors English Literature
Physics
Peer Leadership (Program I have been accepted into, is also a class. )

Can someone please help me to figure out what some good school choices are?

Thank you!

What are you looking for in a school? Have you heard of the University of Rochester? Academically (not culturally…), it’s similar to NYU, and has an arguably stronger pre-med program and a excellent track record for getting its undergraduate students to top medical schools. PM if you have any more questions or want more suggestions.

You may want to visit the Pre-med forum… [Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential](Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential Forums)

If you do pre-med, minimize your undergrad debt.

Do you know how much your family will pay? NYU gives awful aid.

Yea, Im unsure about payment but I doubt I will be able to pay an extremely high price. I want to consider somewhere either in the state or out, (Im in central NJ), and really am considering out of state, but somewhere not TOO FAR. As for schools, I want a good premed program with high medical school acceptance rates, and size doesnt seem to be much of an issue

Pre-med is not an actual major but a group of courses you need to take to be eligible for medical school. You can major in anything and still go to medical school as long as you have these courses.

If your family has financial limitations, you should consider Rutgers or TCNJ for undergrad pre-med. As has been noted, NYU is very expensive and notoriously stingy on aid.

Muhlenburg College in PA is also known for pre-med (small liberal arts college; you might get merit aid depending on stats).

Also, Suny Stony Brook (good school at a good price even for out of state), Ursinus ¶ and St. Marys College (MD/public Honors college) all have very good pre med programs. Best of luck!

How successful you are in applying to med school depends on what you do in college and not some magic the college has with regards to preparing students for med school. So if you want lists of “top 20” someone will supply it, but I doubt such rankings are that meaningful. There are hundreds of colleges that can give you the opportunity to be a strong med school candidate.

One thing to avoid is placing any importance into acceptance numbers. Some schools boast incredible rates, but it boils down to one of two things. Either they start with great students (think Stanford, etc) or the school weeds out students. Look out especially for the “committee letter” which small schools with average students coming in wield like an axe to prevent all but the strongest applicants from applying right out of college; to no surprise, they often boast 90% or better med school “acceptance” numbers for their undergrads.

There is an excellent online handbook at Amherst I recommend you read to get an understanding of the process and what really matters

*Yea, Im unsure about payment but I doubt I will be able to pay an extremely high price. *

You need to “nail that down now.” The amount your parents will pay will LARGELY determine where you should apply.

Your stats aren’t high enough (at this point) to get large merit scholarships that would make OOS publics or private schools affordable. And, your stats aren’t high enough that you would get accepted to the privates that “meet need” and give lots of aid.

*I want a good premed program with high medical school acceptance rates, and size doesnt seem to be much of an issue *

acceptance rate doesn’t matter much if YOU don’t have the stats to get accepted. My son’s school has an 85% acceptance rate to a US-MD school if you have at least a MCAT 29 and a 3.6 science and cum GPA…but you have to have the grades/MCAT. The school does have strong advising and does Committee Letters.

that said…first find out what your money situation is.

And…are you going to retest? Take the SAT and the ACT…some do better on the ACT.

Yes I am retaking. I just took another SAT in June and waiting for my scores, and plan to take them again in october, where i can hopefully increase my score (really caught up in the AP/finals world during May-June, which hampered my scores).

What would be some recommended scores?

*What would be some recommended scores? *

Well, since money is an issue…you really need to have a goal of a 1400 math + CR SAT or ACT 32+…since those scores give a better chance at schools that give great need based aid or merit aid.

Definitely sign up for the Sept ACT …the Oct tests…the Nov tests (if needed).

Get practice books

We still don’t know if you will qualify for need based aid (from the schools that give good aid) or if your parents can pay much.

I have my second SAT score report:
Critical Reading: 630
Math:600
Writing: 580

AND just recieved my AP exam scores:
US History: 5
ENglish Language and Composition: 4
