Unusual Common App Essay Topic?

I'm working on my common app essay and one of my options is to write about how I taught my pet bird to talk when I was 10 years old (it's not a bird that usually learns how to talk and everyone told me to stop trying), and how that taught me that with perseverance and dedication you can accomplish anything. I don't know if it would be classified as "unusual" or typical or boring so I'm kind of iffy about it. What do you guys think of this topic? Yes? No?

bump bump bump

If it’s a bird that’s not even supposed to talk, then that’s awesome. It could make a great topic.

It’s a budgie so it has the ability to mimic sounds but it’s really hard to train and generally doesn’t talk.

I think that would be an amazing essay topic! It’s very original and showcases positive qualities about yourself, so there’s no reason not to.

duettt!

10char

WOAH! you got one of them to talk when you were 10?!??!! That’s effing awesome!!!

But anyways, I would definitely use it if you can make it good and meaningful, since it is pretty darn unique. What would an alternative topic be?

Thanks for all the replies! And a few alternative topics- I considered writing about a Russian doll I painted a few years ago and how each layer represents me. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it’s one of those wooden dolls that has a lot of layers and you can kind of stack them on top of each other. Other than those two, I was considering writing about someone I worked with (a public health worker) and how she influenced me.

Those are great topics. But if you are gonna list all those characters like dilligence, neatness, etc, these essays r gonna be spoilt. Just don’t tell them in your essay directly like I use bright colors because i’m optimistic…sth like that. Don’t do that. Show them and make them feel, experience what you feel and what you experience. Try to cover only one aspect of your self and expound on that, instead of many. Try to be insightful and thoughtful.

I love the bird essay idea. It’s so incredibly creative, honest, and revealing. But I’m a sucker for any childhood anecdote in an essay! hahaha

Hahaha I really like this! I’d love to read that.
