unusual transfer case

Ok so here is my case for Penn CAS

4.0 College GPA
2.3ish GPA in H.S.
2080 on the SATS(retaken in college)

now at Hunter College in NYC(undecided liberal arts major)

1 summer class = 3 credits
4 classes plus a 4 credit full time internship at Sony Music.= 16 credits

then during the winter intersession I took 7 classes online through three different colleges (erie community, suny oswego, and suny purchase) =22 credits

this semester I'm taking six 300 level classes at Hunter, a 3 credit internship at Sony, and a 3 credit online class at Erie= 24 credits

= 65 credits with 4.0

So to sum it up: baaaaad high school stats versus 4.0 in college while completing 65 credits in one year.

Extra Stuff:

-gave my high school graduation speech(my school didn't rank so we did a live "speech-off" that the faculty voted on)

-full time internship at Sony Music Corporation

-helped work with student groups at various business schools including penn state, usc marshall and upenn wharton to book speaking gigs for the CEO of a small record label

-one very good rec, one good rec, and one supplemental Rec. from a high school teacher who talks about my "journey".

-legacy at Penn

I would really appreciate the input of the College Confidential community.
I'm going to apply to Penn no matter what, but I'd like to calm my nerves (one way or another) until that dreaded second week of May.

I think you have a good shot. However, it is more complicated than that. Your high school grades are pretty low, but why? You seem like an intelligent person! You have had a massive, almost seemingly impossible improvement. I think a lot of people would be impressed. At the same time, you are interning for a huge company. Your legacy will definitely help…I’m not sure what to tell you. I’m kinda stuck in a bind here. Also, I’m not sure how online classes would hold in terms of your other courses. Generally, they are non-transferable and maybe not highly regarded. I wish you the best of luck.

You have great college GPAs but terrible, even disastrous GPA in HS. Why? Iam stuck in a similar bind. I have a 4.0 GPA w/ about 10-15 credit hours and a 3.2 GPA in HS. Now, Iam just junior in high school though, so I have a chance to raise it…

I think you should have a good shot of getting in, it’ll probably come down to how strongly adcom feels you’ve matured between HS and College, and your explanation for the GPA discrepancy.

Thank you so much to everyone that responded. The application process has been a tremendous experience within itself and I’m happy, regardless of outcome, as to where it’s brought me in regards to the self-reflection and motivation that I needed to turn my life around.

If you really really have to go to Penn, or any school at all for that matter, you have other options if you are not accepted the regular way or as a transfer.

You can apply for a job there and use tuition remission to take free classes. Prove your grades in those classes, and then apply. Or, you can take classes as a non-matriculated student - you’d have to pay for them, but you can take them.

Your HS GPA is very bad, but I like to assume you had a very heavy and rigorous course load. If you have a personal reason that your grades were bad, I would try to get a note on your record or from the school.

I took a very easy course load in high school. I went through stuff but I don’t make excuses for my behavior. As for non matriculated status, I’m not desperate to attend Penn although I’d like to very much. But if I don’t get in, ill spend my undergraduate years at a non ivy league school like 99% of the world :)
