Unwanted, Undeserved ACT Attention.. x_x;

I got a 31 on the ACT, which is good, but not great. I'm in a class of 90, and it's the highest of anyone. When people ask me what I got, I grudgingly tell them, and they flip out. This girl in Spanish screamed it to the entire class and said that if I wasn't shouting it from the rooftops I was crazy. It's annoying that people think it's that big of a deal. Anyone else have a similar story? It's not like I'm from a dumb school either.. Last year's class of 75 had two National Merit Scholars. x_x; It is extremely annoying, though.

Just enjoy it and stop complaining. ;) Lots of people want scores 30 and up (scholarships tend to set cutoffs around the 30 mark); few people get them. It's only natural that people are surprised to hear you got a 31. After all, according to national percentile rankings, if they asked 100 ACT test takers what they got, only two would say 31 or higher.

lol, it's a lot better than the places (like here on CC...) where a 31 is low and everyone says you have no chance at good colleges...

I know. I'm ONLY in the top 2% of college bound students?!?! I might as well kill myself. I have no reason to live now that my chances at Harvard are 4% lower. People are craaaazy.

"lol, it's a lot better than the places (like here on CC...) where a 31 is low and everyone says you have no chance at good colleges..."

So true! It's either that or "you're a typical Asian."

Idealistic32, I used to think that the val of my school, Mr. 1560/1600 (2280 because of a lower Writing score) on the SAT, was the startest person alive (mabye not quite, but you get the idea). Then I can to CC and I constantly see people with 2300s. Sure, there is no way of knowing if these 2300 people are being honest with us. However, I really don't think that all of them are liars.

You'll feel alittle different when you start to apply or look at scholarship offers. Or at least, your parents will. Early retirement? thanks junior.

I'm in a similar situation Idealistic..
I'm a junior and just got a 227 on my PSATs, which i didn't think anyone would know about but suddenly my teachers started telling all of their students and now the whole school is slowly finding out.
I mean i guess it's cool because i'll be one of the first NMSFs my school's had in years, but its kinda embarassing because it completely ruins my facade/reputation of being the dumb blonde girl in the back of the class, which i surprisingly enjoyed very much

31 is about the average score for top 20 colleges in america

Ditto here. (2360 SAT)

Everyone in school is bugging me about it. It's cool for the first day or so, but after that it just gets annoying.

I kinda had a similar story when I took it my first time and got a 33, which is good too I guess, but not what I wanted :/ My older brother had done better than me and everyone kept comparing me to everyone else.. like oh, my friend got the same score as you, so I guess he is as smart as you.. and everyone kept asking me what I got and if it was really true, and each time I was hesitant to say that was what I got. I raised it up, but I still hate how some people still compare me to others with the same score. One kid from another school got the same score, as his school has classes that are designed to get higher scores, who is not smart at all. When he found out that he got the same score, he seemed to be surprised, thinking that he was as smart as me (which I know sounds very arrogant on my part), although he really wasn't. I've noticed some people who can't make the same score go out of their way to find someone with a better score to tell you about it..

Haha, I set the bar on the October SAT, and everyone's trying to beat it. I think it's pretty amusing, actually, but perhaps because no one has managed to, yet. My school's extremely competitive, and we've probably at least half the overachievers in the county. I was really surprised when my score didn't leak to the teachers until the 2nd or 3rd day after scores came out.

I think people like to know because it gives them a concrete goal of what they "should get." They work by this sort of competition.

"I've noticed some people who can't make the same score go out of their way to find someone with a better score to tell you about it.."

I wholeheartedly agree. My aunt is a "pro" at this. She asks me how I did on a particular test, most recently the SAT, only to shoot me down with a story about some super-high scorer. She always talks about this 2300+ Wharton admit as if he was her son. That's because her own children weren't the best students in the world (mostly B's and C's). She never said how they did on the SAT becaue I'm sure they didn't do well.

haha. Just today someone (who has asked my ACT score on numerous occasions) asked again what mine was. I told him, who has a significantly lower score than I do. He said, "Oh, that's not that high. I thought you would have made much higher because this girl I knew made a perfect score and she partied a lot too. You see, she had the best of both worlds." (the last clause is the exact phrase, but the other words are just pieces of what I remember.) He also made some comment about how he thought I was smarter than that and that he was apparently wrong.

Yeah, last year's seniors had a 35, a 33 a 32 and a couple 31's.. My class must be dumb, if I'm the highest at 31.. xD I'm practically braindead, right? I shouldn't be allowed to live with being in the 98th percentile.
