Unweighted vs Weighted Rankings???

So I have recently been freaking out because i discovered that the high school i switched into Junior year bases their ranking on our unweighted GPA rather than on a weighted scale. And as a student who took numerous IB, Honors, and Pre-Ap classes since 7th grade I was wondering whether I should be even more worried than I am now. I am still in the top 10% and I am hoping my transcript will speak for itself, but do colleges like Yale take into account the difference between Unweighted and weighted rankings?

Oh and do Pre-Ap classes even count as a weighted class???

Please…SOMEONE ANSWER ME!!!

Whether your high school reports a weighted or unweighted GPA doesn’t matter a whole lot. Schools like Yale typically recalculate your GPA (emphasis on core courses) according to their own rubric. They will absolutely take into account the rigor of your curriculum.

^ I’ve read that Yale doesn’t recalculate GPA, they use whatever GPA your school uses because they’re evaluating you in context. If the school uses a weighted system, they’ll use the weighted GPA, and if the school uses an unweighted GPA, then they’ll take the unweighted.

^^^Then how can they truly compare individuals based on their GPA?? Does that mean class ranking is more important??

But for schools that rank w/ unweighted GPA wouldn’t that make rankings harder to compare…since you have to compete against people who take classes like pottery and walking fitness?

Colleges like Y take all these things into consideration.

The information provided in your HS profile and the Background section of the SSR that your HS GC fills out provide the data they need to understand where you stand in your own HS as well as compared to applicants from other HSs. Admissions committees have dealt with a wide range of grading and ranking systems for years, they know that they need to consider the difficulty of coursework, W vs. UW, etc.

speaker: you’re reacting as if Yale has no clue about the various grading/ranking scales out there. Please trust that they pride themselves on knowing many routes to thoroughly evaluate applicants. If you get in or get rejected, it won’t be because of your school’s policies. Good luck to you.

Alright thank you everyone! Yeah I was just a little worried…that’s all, but T26E4 and entomom you all are very right. I should have more faith in the Yale Admissions system. Thanks Again! XD
