UofM -- ANN ARBOR ESSAY Q

The question is
"Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?"
And I've written about how I went against my family's traditional religious beliefs and branched myself off as an atheist.
I later on went to talk about how that attitude compelled me towards doing other things that my parents took me away from, which resulted in me achieving a lot of things I never could have before.
The only thing I have doubts about is that I'm afraid that talking about atheism might belittle other religions. However, I have mentioned how it helped me grow and learn about new religions as well.
Is this an appropriate topic to talk about and help me stand out or would it seem offensive?
thanks

I don’t think it would be offensive or make you stand out, however. I’ve lost count of the number of threads I’ve seen asking this exact question.

Religion is a lightning rod. I would personally avoid it because I know I am not wise enough to write an essay about it when I’m trying to represent myself. If you can handle it with extreme maturity and caution. I would advise against it. You also may come across as anti-establishment and disrespectful to your parents (big no-no) if you are talking about how you are better off without falling your parents because it let you do all these things…I would look for something else. Consider if an evangelical Christian was reading your paper. That person better not be offended by it, or it is too risky.

<-- agree with andrew, I would avoid these topics (religion, politic blah blah), since you dont really know who will read your essay.

Maybe instead of focusing on the religions, you could make it more about you and your experience of changing from one religion to another. If you make it less about the religion, and more about how it made you grow as a person, then I think that could work.
