Update from Dean of Admissions

The Dean of Admissions provided a lengthy update this week to the Board of Visitors about admissions. He said he feels comfortable that UVa's system is honest and straight-forward. He described some policies used by other colleges that UVa does not use.

He said he would prefer if UVa could offer some merit aid to the top students, but it would require additional fundraising. He does not want to increase merit aid at the cost of reducing need-based aid.

He said UVa really is need-blind for admissions for US students. He said that UVa that does not use tricks to try to increase its yield. UVa only counts a person as an applicant if they have completed all of the steps in the application process and provided all of the materials (some other colleges count anyone who submits anything).

He said UVa has cut back on travel by admissions representatives to save money, such as to college fairs, but that they making more use of Skype.

He said early action worked fine, and will be continued. He said the early action decisions will continue to come out in January. He said hundreds of students were deferred from early action to the regular decision round so THE U. COULD REVIEW THEIR SENIOR YEAR GRADES. (Beware the senioritis, people.) He said admissions are not any easier during the early action round than the regular round. He said they sent out a few “likely letters” to top students in early March.
