Update this late in the process

I am a senior and I qualified for the US national chem olympiad this year. It was by qualifying as a nominee in a very competitive area's exam. Would it be wise to send a quick email to Yale and other colleges (Ivys) etc that this award was added to my resume? I understand that it is fairly late in the process, but I would really like to add this if it may help me.

Thanks!

Ivies have pretty much made their decisions at this point so I doubt it would help (this from Cornell’s head of alumni interviews)

I feel my applications are pretty solid, but they are lacking any state/national related awards. I feel like this may give me the slight edge that i’m missing, and though you are probably right, is there any chance this may influence admissions decisions? I also understand I could save it for if i get waitlisted, but ivys (Yale especially) takes so little people from the waitlist that I feel it would be a waste to wait till then.

Well if you really want to, by all means send it. There’s a small chance they’d give your app another look when (if) they see it (assuming that you are not already in the accept pile), but no guarantees.

Will do, thank you WedgeDawg.

You should send it! I just sent an important update to Yale and they put it in my file. It really can’t hurt.

Agree you should go ahead and send it…likely all is done, but it won’t hurt and at the very least, if things don’t turn out as you’d like, you won’t wonder “if only…”
Good luck!

Couldn’t hurt!

Sent in a fax yesterday morning. Just mentioned that I made it to the USNCO.
Thanks all!

Did you receive some type of confirmation after faxing your update?(besides the confirmation the fax machine provides)

I did not, unfortunately.

I’m just hoping/assuming they got it. Sent it last Thursday morning.

They definitely will not be able to consider it in your admissions because there’s a 98.253% chance that they already have decided whether to admit you or not, and this is not significant enough. Furthermore, because most e-mails take 2-4 business days to get sorted and added to your folder, even if they were to consider it, it would be 23rd, which is too late. Too bad, lass.

@OP: i would FAX it if possible. it is true that ivies are done with the majority of the decisions, but there is still room for decisions. Decisions come out 30th, which is 10 days from now. actually, the last minute decisions are happening within the first half of next week.

they only need a few days to confirm decisions etc, so the view that everything is done is wrong. its still going on.

i know ivies are still evaluating because my counselor got a call from an ivy to confirm something last thursday. in addition, cornell just sent their last batch of likely letters to female engineers 3/15.

Even though it’s pretty late, it wouldn’t hurt to send it. If you get waitlisted by any of the Ivys that would also be an appropriate time to notify them, along with an email about why you are still interested in that school.

@Uberville

I FAX’ed them the update last Thursday morning, the 17th. I wrote down all of my personal info (common app ID) with a quick one sentence stating that I had won this distinction, so it would have been added to my folder 3-4 days before you had predicted.

Furthermore, earning a qualifying spot in the national level of an olympiad is not significant enough? I mean, it’s a national recognition. And it’s definitely more significant than any other award I’ve received in the past.

Though it is fairly late, like dottler and Swim18 have mentioned, there should be at least SOME chance of it being added to my file and considered.

Thank you to all three of you for your feedback. I’ve done what I can, so I’m just hoping for the best now.

That’s all you can do! Good luck to you next week.

Sorry … it’s not really national recognition. You compete against people in your region to qualify for USNCO, that’s regional recognition. Unless you’re saying you made the top 20 and are going to participate in the summer camp from which they choose the 4-person USNCO team, or received some certificate for making the top 150 …

That said, you don’t need such recognition to be admitted to Yale. Don’t stress! :)

Ah, I guess you are right YeloPen. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Funny how qualifying for the National Olympiad isn’t technically national recognition :P.

Thank you both for the feedback and the good wishes. Hopefully next week goes well :)

I’m sorry if I sounded discouraging … I actually had the same problem since I qualified for USNCO through my region and technically didn’t go any higher than that haha :)

Really, don’t stress though. The only big award I’ve received actually came after I was admitted, so it is really not a prerequisite for admission  Good luck!

Haha not a problem at all.

And thank you very much!
