Hey, I'm applying to Deerfield Academy for freshman year 2011-2012. I'm currently 13 and in 8th grade. My grades for 2nd quarter are:
Alegbra: A (101% average..my school won't give a+'s)
English: A (100% average)

Science: B (I'm working on it - 86% average, hoping for an A- with exams)
Health/PE: A
Art: A
Music: A
Theater: A
Latin: A
My grades haven't been averaged with exams yet, so they will all probably go up a bit higher. My grades for 6th and 7th grade are all A's with the occassional A-. My school only has advanced math and language classes, and I am in adv french but standard math.

Arts: Won a contest to promote Earth Day, Lead roll in a school play

Recs:
I have a very good relationship with my teachers, so my recs should be good-great

Interview:
I am having a skype interview this weekend along with an alumni interview. I'm pretty good at talking to adults so I'm not too worried. Also, my dad knows someone on the Deerfield board so he is writing me a rec.

SSAT:
I have not taken it yet, and I'm pretty nervous. I'm getting a tutor when I get back from vacation who tutrored a couple of current DA students, so that should help.

Essays:
My essay is pretty good; I still need to have more people read it though for input.

I am from the midwest, so I think that makes me a bit more desireable for diversity. Do I even have a chance at this school? Also, any admission tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much, and good luck to anyone applying this year!

Could anyone chance me please? Thank you!

Wow, you have so many EC’s! As for your grades, you shouldn’t worry about your grades because they only look at your first quarter grades and your grades before that (I don’t think they look at your 2nd quarter grades, do they?). I think it’s going to help you a ton that a person on the Deerfield board is going to write you a rec. If you get good SSAT scores (you should aim for like at least high 80’s) you should get in. Are you only applying to Deerfield?

Oh my gosh, that makes me feel so much better that they won’t see 2nd quater. I had muchhh better grades in the 1st. Yes, I’m only applying to Deerfield this year. My current school ends in grade 12, so if I don’t get in then I’ll just continue at that school and try again at more schools (Deerfield, Hotckiss, St. Pauls, Andover) for 10th grade. Thanks so much, yongatilla!

Your grades are pretty good! If what yongatilla said is true, then you’re pretty much set for the grades. The only thing that I don’t know about is if taking standard math will hurt your application? Either way, try to score above the 85th-90th percentile for math, and that should probably be okay.

Also, you play a lot of sports, so that will definitely help. When did you leave your previous school? I don’t know if they’ll weigh it that much if it was a while ago. You have some awards, and you should place emphasis on being the valedictorian. (Just a side note, but were the Presidential and National Fitness Awards from gym class? I think I did that too.)

Having great recommendations from your teachers and the board member will also help. Just remember that most people (in my opinion) have pretty good recommendations from their teachers, so try to not concentrate on this as much. Also, you posted this on the 3rd, and said that you’re going to get a tutor? Isn’t this a bit late? I’m not sure what Deerfield’s policy is, but I thought that the latest possible SSAT for applications is the January one. If you’re taking the February SSAT, that might be pushing it to the last minute a bit. Just try to study hard and aim at the 90th percentile or greater. If possible, you should focus more on the SSAT and your essay to make up for some of your weak points (not many major awards, mainly sports for ECs). I think overall, you have an okay chance of getting in, if you have good SSATs and essay, etc. Good luck!

One message:
You have amazing stats… like every other CCer
But I am also in no position to chance you… like ever other CCer

I can wish you luck though!

willowmist-I left after 6th grade, when the school ends. Deerfield gives an extension to basically everyone until Feb 11th, and they said it shouldn’t effect anything. I sent in part one of my app in and part two will probably be sent later this week, so I’m not missing the dead lines. I’m taking the SSAT January 27th and February 5th so that I have time to tutor. Deerfield said many almost all their applicants will send in SSAT scores later, and that it shouldn’t be a problem.
angeverlasting-Thank you!

I wish my kids’ school started track in 3rd grade. ;-)

It was an elementary school, track meets start very early…

That’s unusual I think unless it’s a program outside school. I don’t remember competitive sports at school until 6th or 7th grade?

well obviously, we don’t go to the same school or live in the same state, or probably even the same region. where i live, private elementary schools host track meets many, many times a year for all elementary grades.

@bender12,
I see you’re a track person. What events do you do? And btw, I’ve talked to the Deerfield track coach and he’s a really nice guy, you should email him.
