upenn and some other stuff

i have a list of accomplishments basically dealing with leadership and science fair, but i just got my SAT score today and wanted some opinions based mainly on that.

im a junior and this was my first time take the SATs.

i made penn's 50th percentile [for this year's incoming class anyway], but just BARELY. and when i say barely, i mean it. needless to say, its not the most comfortable position to be at, sitting right at the 50th percentile cutoffs for each section.

PSAT - 68 CR, 62 M, 69 W

SAT - 650 CR, 670 M, 660 W

7 essay. <<<<!!!! i dont understand this at all! im NOT bragging, but i just cant grasp how i can get a's on ap lit and apush essays, but not even receive above the median for an SAT essay.

some other questions...does upenn care if i am a first generation student? also, being asian, im "supposed" to get a near perfect score on the math, though as you can see, its not close. should i mention that im asian on the app? my name would probably be a dead giveaway anyways, but i figure id ask.

look, i know CC members are the cream of the crop SAT and accomplishment wise, but the ivies are made up of more than just near perfect SAT scores and i'd appreciate opinions based on this realization. =]

thanks for your time!

SAT is low..What's your GPA? 1st generation helps, but not that much..and the Ivies ARE made up of near perfect SAT scores

bai

4.0 unweighted, taking the most rigorous curriculum offered at my school. 4.25 weighted [end of sophomore year]. 4.45 by this year's end.

oh yea, also valedictorian

Uh, the median (50th percentile) CR +M SAT at Penn for this past year's Freshman class is 1430. Your CR+M is 1320, 110 points below (and also 10 points below the 25th percentile). While a 1320 is a decent score, and would be competitive at all but a handful of colleges, it is not competitive at Penn, or any Ivy for that matter. Realistically, if you can't bring your CR+M above 1400, you have little chance of getting into Penn.

On the other hand, there's a large bunch of good schools where a 1320 would make you quite competitive. Here's a sample list:

Wake Forest
Lehigh
NYU
Boston College
University of Rochester
University of Wisconsin - Madison
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
Syracuse University
George Washington
Boston University

There's lots more. Take some time. Do some research. You'll find them.

Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile

^^^ upenn's site has the middle 50 percentiles listed as:

650CR
670 M
660 W

still aiming for 700+ in each section though

You misunderstand. The stats you have quoted are the bottom of the middle 50%, that is, the 25th percentile. 75% of the accepted applicants scored higher. Also, Penn accepted only about 15% of the applicants who scored at or near the 25th percentile, and you can bet many of them were athletes, legacies, or kids with special talents or rich parents. I repeat, with your current SAT scores, you have little chance of being accepted at Penn. Bring your SATs up to, say, 1450, and bring your class rank up to number 1 or 2, and your chances rise to about 30%. Any way you look at it, Penn is a tough school to get into.

oh yes, i understand where my scores are. thats why i said i barely made the middle 50 range and why i want to raise my score 150-200 pts.

also, i am already valedictorian as i have said before 1/300 some

I wouldn't stress to much about your SAT's if you're valedictorian. A great class rank, almost always makes up for medicore SAT scores. And as Val, you have something like a 35% chance of getting in according to their Stats profile...
