UPenn Engineering and PreMed

Hey Guys,

I’m planning on ED to Upenn engineering school, and was wondering how hard it is to go to the engineering school at Penn (or any Ivy League or top 20 school) and still keep up a good enough GPA and extracurriculars to keep the medical school door open? Any thoughts are welcome (especially if you are an engineering major at one of these top schools)!

Thanks!

Engineering is hard.

Engineering is a very hard major to keep a med-school-worthy GPA.

My son went to his state flagship (not a top 20 school) as a Chemical Eng’g Premed. I think that if he had gone to a top ranked school as an eng’g major, his GPA would have suffered.

I just ran into someone whose son recently graduated from Penn Engineering and currently is at U Miami Medical school.

She said it was very, very hard and he struggled to maintain B’s or B-'s … but he ended up doing extremely well on his MCATs and had several med schools offer him admission. He had to really limit the amount of activities and clubs he was involved in and even stayed some summers to take a course and do volunteer work w local non profits…

But he loved it.

Difficult, but definitely achievable for a top student.
