UPenn interview

I applied ED to Penn and I realized that it wasn’t the right school for me so the majority of the interview I spent talking about how my parents forced me to apply and that I had no wish to attend UPenn. Does this mean an automatic rejection?

Pretty much.

I really hope so. I heard that interviews don’t matter much so thats why I’m kinda worried. The interviewer emailed me back after and said “thanks for being honest and feel free to reach out to me if u have any questions or wish to change your mind” I then responded saying “I am certain that Penn is not the right school for me, I wouldnt be happy their, my parents forced me. etc.” <-- would this mean im guaranteed to get rejected?

The only time the interview can make or break an application is when you tell the interviewer, who is an extension of the AOs, that you don’t want to be admitted — which is exactly what you did.

The interviewers are people that absolutely love their alma mater (Penn). They’re taking time out of their day to help the school admit great students for the future generation. They are looking for students that will embrace the school community and take advantage of resources and opportunities. The interviewers certainly don’t expect someone that doesn’t want to go to the school to do those things. For that reason, you will most likely get what you want.

Why would you be so disrespectful of someone’s time like that? You could have just told the interviewer on the phone or in email that you no longer wish to be considered for Penn.

@PetraMC Perhaps OP realized that Penn wasn’t for him hearing the interviewer’s experience.

Hard to imagine and definitely not the most mature way to go about getting oneself pulled from consideration. If OP really wants to make sure he doesn’t get accepted, the Admissions Office is just a phone call away.

@PetraMC I can just call the Admissions Office and say I no longer want to be considered for UPenn??? Wouldn’t this go against the whole ED policy?

WAIT am i allowed to call admissions office and tell them to move my ED to RD applicant pool without any issue and without breaking the ED contract? Considering I do it this week (before decisions come out)???

You are misunderstanding the ED contract. The contract states that once you are accepted, you must withdraw all applications to other schools and commit to Penn unless there is a financial reason that prevents you from committing. In other words, the contract only applies to those that are admitted.

So you can call the admissions office to withdraw your application without breaking any contract as long as you do it before you are accepted. In terms of switching to RD, I’m pretty sure you can do it but considering the fact that you told your interviewer that Penn is not the right choice, you probably ruined any chances of getting in.

At this point, if I were you, I would just sit back and focus on completing other schools’ applications.

@ayakobi26 Ok thank you!!!

Do you guys know if its too late to switch from ED to RD if I call today??? (Results come out Dec 9th i think)

No, you still have time to switch.

@skieurope ok thank you!

Ok so I called them and they said it’s fine, just need to email them. Does it matter what i put as my reason for the change?

They do not care about the reason. They just want a record of the change.

Why do you want to switch to RD? You almost certainly won’t get in if you told them Penn’s not a good fit. Shouldn’t you just withdraw the application entirely?

@halfdust I plan on doing ED II to a school anyways so I guess it doesn’t really matter…I might withdraw not sure yet.
