^Adding on to this, is it worth notifying my regional admissions officer of my error?
@bobchillax At this point, in my opinion, it’s too late in the game to notify your regional admissions officer, and you only risk drawing more attention to this typo. Your regional officer is probably bogged down with other aspects of the decision-making process, as there is only one month left, and emails such as these might serve to annoy him or her. Admissions officers know that applicants are humans and make mistakes, and who knows, maybe the admissions officers reading your essay didn’t even notice this mistake (as they read tons of applications every day and get weary and tired like everyone else). Even if they do end up rejecting/waitlisting you, I do not believe it will be just because you wrote “the University of Philadelphia” instead of “the University of Pennsylvania,” especially if you had it correct in the rest of your essay.
@bobchillax if you just made the error once in your whole app, dont update Penn about it. It’s too minor a mistake
@allista @anotherdude Thanks for the advice - i really needed to hear that. #deanfurdaplzshowmercy
@bobchillax I’m not sure, but I think that mentioning an error might draw attention to it. Don’t worry about it!
@bobchillax You should email them as soon as possible and beg them to let you revise your essay. And also sincerely apologise for causing this inconvenience. If you see the videos of admissions officers talking about things that could prevent your admission, one thing they all seem to mention is writing the name of other colleges in their essays. The admissions officer will probably roll his/her eyes and say to himself, wow this guy is obviously not interested enough in Penn to atleast proofread his essays before sending them in. Not worth it.
So please email them, call them or do something to change that name. If not, it will severely impact your application because the colleges will most definitely take offense. Ivy leagues in particular have an infamous reputation for churning out elitist prigs (some admissions officers can let their prestige get to their head and hence, will be offended).
I don’t mean to scare you or freak you out. sorry if I did.
All the best.
@rahuilmars231 I thought about contacting them, but after looking over other people’s comments and speaking to my college counselor, it seems to make more sense to leave it be. As others pointed out, I wouldn’t unnecessarily draw attention to an error they may very well miss entirely. I clearly researched the school (I specifically reference multiple school programs and my visit to campus in my essay), so a small typo shouldn’t make them think that I copy-pasted my essay from another school. Also, it helps that the University of Philadelphia doesn’t exist (phew!). But thanks for your advice!
@bobchillax I think the admissions officers will definitely notice that you wrote the wrong name of the school, and might lead them to think you’re not interested in the school enough to proofread your essay. However, as you’ve pointed out, there is no University of Philadelphia, so at least they won’t think you copied and pasted the essay. What I always go by is that admissions officers try to look for reasons to admit you, not deny you, so if they don’t accept you, it’ll be because other students had more reasons for acceptance, not because you had reasons for rejection (if that makes any sense). Basically, if your application as a whole is good, then you still have a chance.
