I think you have a great shot, just have to position yourself accordingly

Thanks man :). Jw, what do you mean by position accordingly? XD

What may end up hurting you are the 4s in Chemistry and Physics in my opinion. They will not disqualify you, but they are not reassuring since your GPA is also kind of weak.

Thanks perazziman for your advice :). Do you know where I would have a chance then? Anyone else?

ha! 3.5 GPA isn’t bad at all and your EC’s are killing me! do me a favor and don’t apply to UIUC. A less competitive applicant pool will really help my chances and you probably wouldn’t even go there when you get admitted to Uchicago, Cornell, etc.

You have a chance at all of them but add a couple of Lehigh and RPI level schools to the mix.

Thanks both of you!. I’ll start looking at colleges like rpi and lehigh, although those two particular ones are two of my least fave colleges xD.

almost done with my apps. Any final comments? :D

I would not sell your self short, although adding a few safeties like Lehigh and RPI are good ideas. A 2340 SAT and strong research experience are qualifications most people with your GPA do not have. Also, 33-50% chance is hardly saying a shoo-in, just a solid chance. As for lol goldenboy, I went to Duke and you are right that they do not accept many 3.5s, but most of those candidates do not have anywhere near a 2340 or the research expeirence of this candidate.

Thanks for the advice muckdogs07 :). I’m mostly concerned with uiuc, umich, upenn, and uchicago right now since those are my early applications. Do you know how I stand at these colleges? Thanks!

Also, anyone else?

Well, all I can say is that you have way better chances than me…
I have the great grades/test scores but my EC’s suck. I definitely feel self-conscious about that part of my app.
But to me I don’t understand these people who are taking 25 AP classes, have like 80 EC’s and internships and national awards… and still make it out of high school with 4.0’s 2350+ SATs, etc.
To me, there HAS to be a give and take. I’ve met people like this, and I personally do not think theyre so superior academically to me so this is what I think…
a) School’s easy. AP’s are pretty much a joke. Have plenty of time to do EC stuff.
b) They’re taking difficult classes, but spreading themselves thin on EC, maybe lying on common app when talking about how much time they put into it
c) They’re Einstein reborn.

I would wager to cross off c). The reason I make these conclusions is because there is simply not enough time in a day to get all of this done… Now, I’m not sure. But I think I remember hearing the Dean of Admissions at a UChicago info session say something along the lines of don’t have your total time in EC’s exceed the number of hours in a day. I could have misinterpreted that or misheard…

But anyway. I think the college people should be smart enough to realize that this does involve give and take. I gave to much to school, too little to EC’s. You gave more to EC’s it seems than to school. I personally think if you can get that GPA up you’d have a shot definitely, but that’s just my opinion… mostly because im impressed with your EC’s because of my lack thereof :)

P.S. For UChicago write kick-butt essays.

Forgot to say - UChicago is a very academic school. I assume grades are important, but I in no way can speak for the admissions office.

But a few years ago a student from my school got waitlisted there, while another student with slightly lower grades got accepted. The one that got accepted was more well-rounded. But then again I think UC admissions are unpredictable. I’m applying there too EA. Who knows?

Thanks atomic. You gave me a lot of insight into uc’s admission and the variety of students.

Anyone else?

looks like a pretty good resume!
in spite of your gpa, i think you have a reasonable shot at all of the schools that you’re applying to. your extracurricular involvement is impressive.
chance me back please?? xD
