Upper Class Dorms

Rising junior interested in good and bad reviews for upperclass dorms for next year. In Broome now, not staying. Where are the nicest rooms that are closest to WSP?? Thanks in advance.

Do an Explorations application to try and get into the Union Square cluster. That’s your ONLY chance. Juniors get royally screwed by the lottery, and you will end up in Lafayette if you don’t try to fill an application out.

I’ll let the students chime in with good and bad reviews. Did want to tell you that nyunews.com has a housing guide each year. Haven’t checked lately but that should be up on the website soon. There are also tours of each eligible dorm (probably coming up soon). This past week there was a presentation from Housing.

Unfortunately, Juniors have the worst lottery pick time slots (last).

may i ask why you’re not staying in broome? are you part of the residential college or are you one of those who were placed in on the 2nd/3rd floors?

i’m the vp of the residential college board that oversees the residential college so i just want to know why so we can improve.

(and just a little note: if you are in res college, as a rising junior you get better preference than a sophomore who’s in the program. we’re separate from the lottery system with our own process).

Gah I’m tired of hearing people in Broome complain - I’m up on 26th which is the furthest dorm and has the tiniest bedrooms (smaller than Weinstein!) with bunk beds. I would love to be in Broome right now. 26th and University Court are both becoming Med school dorms next year though, so it’s not an option anymore.

anyway, the best upperclassmen dorms are in Union Square - Carlyle Court, Palladium (has a dining hall and gym) and University Hall. There’s also Alumni Hall and 13th St which are really close to campus. Your chances of getting these are slim. Then there’s Greenwich Hotel which is ok except it’s out in West Village and of course Broome and Lafayette which i’m sure you’re familiar with. And there’s Gramercy Green which is essentially a luxury condo, except it’s out on 23th St and pretty far from campus.

honestly, I bet the housing lottery will screw you over and stick you in broome or laf.

alix you don’t get into broome unless there are empty rooms after our housing selection process for res college…which at this point idk if there are going to be many. and you dont get to pick broome in the lottery, you just get assigned to it.

D did end up “picking” Broome after her group (which included a single) were closed out of all other options as rising sophomores. She is on the 2nd floor and is very happy. She joined res college and is hoping to stay at Broome. She loves the location and has enjoyed res college, too.

To the OP–what don’t you like about Broome?

great to hear your D enjoying the area and res college.

should tell her to start getting involved in leadership opps in the res college like the college board. its a great way to get experience as a leader as well as help her out in the housing selection process which is coming up in early april.

Thanks for feedback. To be clear, no complaints with Broome or its location. Not part of res college, just put there this year.
