so, it appears my son is going to have a sophomore for a roommate. he, and I, have some mixed feelings. anyone had any experience with a situation like this? On the one hand it will be someone who could be a good resource, on the other, my son was looking forward to meeting someone in the same year as he will be.

I am an upperclassman (Junior) and will be rooming with a freshman. The best thing I would do was to talk to him if you are still having mixed feelings.

Since he is a sophomore, he may be more experienced and may be a good go-to person for you son. Plus, although your son wanted a same year as himself, chances are he is going to have upperclassman in a few of his courses, so it may not be a huge difference if he had a same year rooming with him.

In a suite style dorm or hall dorm?

he’ll be in suite style in Broward

There will be 3 other suitemates so I really don’t think it is a big deal.

And if the email has 09 in it, it does not mean he is a sophomore. Emails that were assigned in 09 to freshman who were accepted in Nov/Dec and went on right away and got an email address have 09 in them just like the sophomores who have 09 in their email address. The 09 is the year the email was assigned and has nothing to do with what class you are in. Or it could be a sophomore transfer who is spending his first year at FSU. That is like a freshman…

no, my son has already “friended” him on facebook. he’s a sophomore and actually is from our area. seems very nice–but as I said, my son kind of hoped for someone starting off in the same boat. I’m sure it will be fine and looking at the bright side–he will be able to help my son navigate his first year…
maybe such a low priority number wasn’t a good thing for being paired with another freshman. now I wonder if his suitemates will be upperclassmen as well, since they get priority over freshmen and my son’s number being so low…

Trust me, it is not that big of a deal. Freshmen, even though they want to meet people from their class, want the knowledge that the sophomores have.

When in a suite style dorm, the chances of your son mingling with the sophomore decrease significantly as compared to him living in a double.

That being said, if your son wants to hang out with the sopho, then thats his choice.

And Sunnyflorida makes an excellent point, as always :)

I know someone who is a freshman and his email says 09 and he is taking summer classes.

Don’t worry about it, its no biggie ^^
