Hey guys I have a really quick question, I am an instate junior planning to apply to UVA.
My GPA is on the low side but I feel my improvement from each year is significant enough to balance out my low GPA, and my SAT score is decent but not great.

Freshamn Year UW GPA: 3.3333 (all honors and a AP level class called World Civilizations)
Sophomore Year UW GPA: 3.7 (2 AP's, and remaining honors)
Junior Year UW GPA: 4.0 (4 AP's and remaning honors)
SAT superscored: 2020
Leadership: one of the captains on Robotics Team and teach abroad in India every summer

So my question really is, does my "upward trend" through high school put me at a good shot for getting accepted in UVA???

Yes, I think so. You show maturity, and that you are challenging yourself in a great way. SAT is very solid. Your Robotics Team experience is really different, I’m sure you didn’t list all you EC’s, but I bet if you did, you are on the exact right track. Keep up the good work, and best of luck to you.

This is just my speculation, but I think they emphasize one’s RANK most importantly. Schools have many ways of grading the students, but in the long run, they want to see that one is competitive and at the top of their class (top ranked). Tons of schools use smoke and mirrors to blur where kids are, but in the long run at UVA, they will look at the weighted score, (and in IMHO) >the rank, and take into account the essays and EC’s.

I’m pretty sure colleges look at the unweighted GPA. Every school seems to do weighting differently, so it would be unfair to compare weighted GPAs. For example, the highest weighted GPA on record from my HS was a 4.22, whereas some schools add weights that could bring someone up to a 5.0 (or higher?). Weighted GPAs are there so that your high school can determine the class rank more accurately, and end up with only one or (at worst) a handful of valedictorians instead of 20, some of whom never touched an AP class. Colleges WILL look at class rank.

Thnx for the info, but I have a question
I know for a fact my school does not do class ranks; so how would colleges know your class rank?? is this by judging bu ur weighted GPA??

They check the school profile that your HS sends them to see the grade distribution and other pertinent info like what’s the hardest curriculum and if you’ve taken it. And from that they can compare you to the rest of your class.

Also, the year applied, if a school does not rank the students, many schools would ask the guidance counselor then to estimate rank. Top 5%? 10%, 25%? etc…
