I was recently accepted by U of R, and on the wait-list of UVa. I still want to give it a shot for UVa, though I know that they have a loooong wait-list.
I'm nearly certain that I'll go to UR.
Just in case, if I'm accepted by UVa, which one is better?
I signed for Econ major, but I'm not sure if I'll study Econ for all my fours years...
Anyway, is there any advice??
Thank you very much!!

There is no better in this case, just a question of cost and personal preference.

UR is a good school for anyone who may switch or expand their area of study. There are no standard distribution requirements and the “cluster” method - you take 3 related classes in areas you want - means that minoring and double majoring are easier. Lots of kids double.

Thx! I know UR is a good school, and I like it. I just think it’s too cold, and there is no big city near that area…

And UVA is sweltering in the summer and there’s no big city close by either. (DC is good couple of hours away.)

so you are saying that uva is not that good…actually it’s quite similar with ur??

UVA and UR are very different schools in terms of academic and social atmosphere.

But on the superficial level of having uncomfortable weather and not having big cities nearby—they’re both the same.

Oh…Can you please tell me something about the academic and social atmosphere both in UVA and UR?? Thank you!

RunXuan, if I may be so bold -

Right now, forget about UVa. It’s an excellent school, but you have not been accepted. That may change, but hanging on to that hope is robbing you of the ability to move forward and get excited about the choices you do have. Concentrate on them, so you can get a head start on your college career. If the UVa acceptance comes in, you can reevaluate. But don’t lose the chance to focus on your current choices.

Too many kids are paralyzed by “the waitlist” and never get in. Then they show up for orientation at their next choice, with all the disappointments & frustrations, and cannot take advantage of the opportunities they do have and new friends that they might make.

Compare your choices only to each other and decide where you’d rather go. If UVa comes through, you can switch gears.

OK…Thank you! I know what you mean, and it’s very helpful. But, I don’t mean that I dislike Rochester. I like it a lot, and I know it’s a decent school…
The reason I want to compare it with UVa is just that I don’t know well about UR actually, so I want to know more about the university to see if it really matches me by comparing it with a university which I know better… And I do want to get some suggestions about how to get off UVa’s wait-list.

There is not a whole lot you can do to get off a waitlist anywhere. It largely depends upon factors that are outside of your control.

Since UVa is a big school, there is nothing you can do about their wait list except wait.

UVa is more frat, more Southern, more preppy.

RunXuan–there is a big city near UR–It’s called Rochester, NY!!

Rochester, NY: 200,000 people
Charlottesville, VA: 40, 000 people

What do you mean by preppy??

Oh, that’s good! ^^

[Preppy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Preppy - Wikipedia)

Rochester is 200k but the metro area is 1 million.
