Urban colleges or colleges with a nice town, warm weather

My senior daughter thought she LOVED Elon when she first toured it because of its beauty, warmer weather etc. However, after spending time on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, she and then going back to Elon, realized that she wants more of a town that she can spend time at too. She loved College of Charleston, but not sure if their majors/minors are too limited for her since she is currently undecided. She would love warmer weather but may be willing to consider University of New Hampshire so I am thinking if the rest fits she will be willing to be flexible.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

What are her stats? What can you afford to pay?

Has she applied/been accepted anywhere yet? If she’s currently a senior, it’s kind of late to be adding schools as many deadlines have already passed or will be passing very soon. Or is she planning on a gap year?

CofC has a pretty good variety of majors and programs. Are there particular interests that you’re concerned she couldn’t pursue there? The school seems quite good in terms of flexibility to choose/change majors.

What level of competitiveness are you looking for? If she could get into UNC Chapel Hill OOS, that’s a pretty high bar, and suggests she could be in the honors college at CofC which could be an added plus.

But, application deadlines are here or fast approaching. Where has she already applied?

Rhodes in Memphis?

Any geographic preferences? Arizona/Arizona State could be considered.

Has she applied to Elon and UNC? Are you a NC resident?

Is your D considering a gap year? It’s a little late to be sending in applications now…?

Tulane?

Samsmom20, I didn’t want to overwhelm with detail initially however I suppose I left out some important information, my apologies!
My daughter has a different college application from many. We have no idea how some of the more competitive colleges will review it. She never recovered fully from mono as a freshman. So she dropped language, AP art and band in order to fit a modified schedule and had over 100 absences I. Her sophomore year. She did better last year however did not take any advanced courses because she was pretty sick and trying to stay in school. She had a few B+’s due to her absences so her gpa was a 92 by the end of junior year despite having all A’s that year. She is doing better this year taking a college English course, AP environmental science and calc AB. Her first quarter average was a 98 unweighted and 102 weighted. She could not prep for the act or sat AND manage school and homework so she ended up with a 26, 27 superscored. She has only been able to manage sporadic attendance at a few extra curricular activities so far this year, but has perfect attendance so far in school.

She has been accepted to Elon, George Mason, James Madison, and Eckerd, waitlisted at Clark.

We have not been able to do many college visits because she can’t travel AND stay on top of her work and be at school everyday; traveling takes plenty out of her! So we are very behind with regard to learning what she likes and what she doesn’t about a campus.

She is passionate about the environment and sustainability but thinks she’d rather have a career in an area related to social justice and policy or human development; maybe even food science. So as you can see, she’s all over the place!

Her health is better when she is in a warmer climate and California would be perfect for her but we are in New York and I am willing to let her explore farther away areas but California we all agree is just too far!

Aquapt, she is pretty all over the place with what she might be interested in, but perhaps food science or social justice related majors and I don’t think these were listed as majors/minors on CoC website .

She absolutely cannot get into UNC (we are in New York so OOS)! My son is there, but my daughter had a rocky high school experience ( If you don’t mind reading such a long post, see my response above).

We need to plan some more visits and I’d like to make sure we aren’t overlooking something obvious

^Arizona, Arizona State, Alabama, and Clemson would fit the criteria based on GPA/test scores.

You might want to look at Rollins College. Winter Park Florida (Orlando area) is beautiful with a lovely town in Winter Park and close to so much more. It is a wonderful area.

Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptances. Elon sounds like a great school for her. I am sorry to hear about her health challenges, but happy to hear about progress.

Have you looked at UNC Asheville or Wilmington?

Twogirls, thank you so much for your kind words. We are grateful for her progress and relieved that she has been accepted to some nice schools. I didn’t mean to imply that she thinks she can be admitted into UNC. I only mentioned it because she has spent some time there visiting her brother and she realized that she liked the hustle and bustle of Franklin street in contrast to what we saw off campus when visiting Elon. She loved College of Charleston because it was so integrated into the city!

I understand…no worries! There is a lot to love about UNC…the hustle and bustle of Franklin Street and the way the town merges so nicely with the campus. I hope your son loves it.

My friend’s son is at College of Charleston and is very happy. I mentioned the other UNC campuses because she may like their towns as well. Have you looked at the University of Delaware? Great campus and town.

Poppyseedz, thank you for the suggestion. I will have her research Rollins.

We did also drive to Wilmington on a day that the college was closed. No one was out and it was a grey day. We should give it a try again because we live near the water on Long Island and she LOVES the beach and being close to the water.

@percussionboymo I completely understand - my DD24 has a very similar chronic illness (POTS). She also feels better in warmer climates and close to the coast/beach (We are in PA).

Congrats on her acceptances - she already has some great options. I think CofC would also be a good option, as well as Eckerd, though it’s far from home, due to their proximity to the coast/sea level.

Samsmom20, my daughter was diagnosed with post viral chronic fatigue intially and after doing a lot of research, I suspected she had POTS, had herevaluated and that is what she is currently being treated for! I hope your daughter is managing well; it’s such a rollercoaster isn’t it?

I wonder if she might like Warren Wilson? It’s both artsy and environmentally focused, and “alternative” in a way that might be great for her health and life-balance. (Campus work assignments are part of the program, but I assume they could accommodate someone who needed something not too physically strenuous.) Good access to the city of Asheville which I think would meet her “nice town” criterion very well. They give good merit aid, too. Admissions are rolling. https://www.warren-wilson.edu/academics/programs/

How about NC State? I was near that campus recently. Also, bustling lively area.

Aquapt, we will take a look! Asheville is a beautiful area!

Nw2this, she did apply to NC State but it will be a real reach with her application being what it is.
