Urgent Dorm Questions

Hey guys. I’m going to Northwestern this fall and I need to get this information by tomorrow, ASAP. Thanks, I really appreciate any help you can give me.

At the NW website many of the dorms say that each room is for 1 or
2 people. What % of the rooms at places like Ayers CCI, Chapin,
Elder, Sargent, 600 Lincoln, and 1835 are single? I really want double
and I assume that most of these places have mostly doubles right?

Which dorms are mostly freshmen? (approx what %) and are any dorms
all frosh besides Hinman and Elder?

Can you apply to a res college after freshman year?

Which dorms have really good or really bad dining halls?

Which dorms are close to SPAC (the main gym)?

In general, as a non-party-animal-but-still-pretty-social person who
wants to major in econ and be in a mostly (if not all) freshman dorm
with light substance use and light-moderate drinking where should I
be?

Thanks again.

Hey, I'm just an incoming frosh too but I'll try to answer what I know.

You won't get a single unless you check the box for a single on the survey. Even if you do that, you may not get a single.

Hinman and Elder are the only all-frosh dorms I THINK. Bobb and Allison and I think Willard and Sargent are roughly half-freshman?

Yeah. You can apply to one as a freshman non-resident too, and participate in the programming.

not sure

Most North Campus dorms.

I realize some of this has been addressed in other threads, but I have not been able to find thorough answers to all of these questions...so the more info the better please! I am in crunch time!

Thanks much

Gradatgrad:

thanks a lot for the info, I really appreciate it.

what do u mean by participate in prgramming?

No singles for freshmen next year, I believe, unless you live in Healthy Living/ Interfaith. There are a few singles available in the big dorms but you are very unlikely to get them, I don't think you even can if you don't check single.

Which dorms are mostly freshmen? (approx what %) and are any dorms all frosh besides Hinman and Elder?

600 Lincoln, I believe, is all freshmen. It's like a smaller Elder. Most dorms have slightly more spots reserved for freshmen than sophomores.

Can you apply to a res college after freshman year?

Yes; during the year you can become a non-res at any res college, it costs a little money but you get a key and get put on the list of res college members. Then you can earn points like any other resident and live there the next year.

Which dorms have really good or really bad dining halls?

Allison and 1835 Hinman are my personal favorites. Willard's has its good days but sucks a lot of the time too. I hear Sargent is pretty good. Plex has good made-to-order stuff but no freshmen in Plex next year (it's pretty central on campus though).

Which dorms are close to SPAC (the main gym)?

Specifically, Ayers, Bobb and Sargent are very close, but Elder is not too much further. You should be fine anywhere North.

If you want all-freshmen, Elder is a solid choice. However you will DEFINITELY find a healthy supply of freshmen in ANY of the main dorms, all have plenty of rooms reserved for freshmen. I'd recommend Allison and Willard (big and social but you seem to be preferring north campus) and Bobb (where the partying is heavier and the rooms are smaller) as well.

dfleish:

Thanks for that! it is a lot of help

a couple more questions:
1. what dorms are small and have mostly frosh? because I am pretty sure I would rather a small dorm
2. whats this point system? whenever people talk about the res college i get confused, can i get a rundown or something about what its all about?
3. do elder's facilities suck? a couple people have told me they do...
4. is Ayers CCI like anti-social? I'm really no party animal so i kinda wanna stay away from allison & willard and opt for ayers...but maybe i shouldnt...

Thanks a megaload!

note....sarge does not have good food...it seems good the first 20 times you go there....but then you realize that it sucks when you eat at Hinman (1835 that is) or Allison or Norris. CCI is very very anti-social in my experience. If you want to party, though, you're right next to Bobb-Mc so it's not a problem....just don't try drinking in CCI...i know from experience it's a bad choice - that was the closest i ever got to being written up

PS...if you want to be social, I firmly believe that Bobb-Mc is the place to be freshman year....

what dorms are small and have mostly frosh? because I am pretty sure I would rather a small dorm

600 Lincoln and Hinman... but they're not really as social. If you are as "social" as you say you will not want a smaller dorm.

whats this point system? whenever people talk about the res college i get confused, can i get a rundown or something about what its all about?

haha, why did you ask about living in a res college next year if you don't even know what one is, wouldn't that have been a better question? Anyway, in res colleges, the dorms have bigger budgets and there are a lot of community-forming events- trips into Chicago, formals, etc. There are dorm activities like recycling, hanging up publications, attending and hosting firesides, hosting munchies, being on a Dance Marathon fundraising committee, etc. You earn points for doing these things. At the end of the year, if you want to live in the dorm again you need a certain # of points. Room selection is based on who has the most points. (Much simpler and more fair than the housing lottery for dorms.)

do elder's facilities suck? a couple people have told me they do...

I don't know, but the people I know who live there love it and are very tight.

is Ayers CCI like anti-social? I'm really no party animal so i kinda wanna stay away from allison & willard and opt for ayers...but maybe i shouldnt...

Ok, I don't know why incoming freshmen think they know everything about the dorms, but "social" dorms don't mean every night, every person is drunk, the noise level is unbearable, and it's impossible to live a normal life because of the partying. It just means people like to have fun, will leave their doors open, will actually TALK to you at dorm events, will not ALWAYS be studying and at the library, etc... and on weekends, people will want to go out and have fun. In your original post you classified yourself as social and friendly, and a "mild" partier, which is probably representative of 80% of Willard and Allison. The other 20% are the random people who live there even though they aren't social and the ones who are always drunk/high. So, if you aren't as social as you say, then Ayers would be a better fit, or maybe Sargent. If you are, then Willard and Allison will be fine.

Also, take how much you drink/party now and I guarantee it will increase enormously when you get to college unless you just decide not to do it at all, because that's just how it is. A good number of students here had never partied before college, that is really common at a school like NU. You will probably change, both your habits and as a person.

dfleish is right...you will probably party more once you get to college...it's just that you're surrounded by kids your own age and in an environment with much less authority figures...

yes, elder's facilities suck bigtime. but i still thought it was a pretty good place to live for my freshman year.
