The Hofstra School of Medicine is a blossoming institution. As a new medical school, it has all the tested advantages of traditional medical programs, without the disadvantages of stagnant tradition. It is still being defined by the forward-thinking educators that founded it and the committed students whom it serves. As someone who has enjoyed the challenges of building clubs and community service projects at my small high school, I appreciate the opportunities that such a program provides for leadership and impact. The theme that most struck me in researching the Hofstra School of Medicine was the emphasis on patient-centered care and patient- centered education. Clinical work is something emphasized from the earliest stages of training. Training first-year medical students to work on North Shore LIJ ambulances as EMTs is one particularly notable example of this approach. A physician is rarely able to work with complete data in any situation. Learning medicine with all of the urgency and action that make it such a difficult, yet such a rewarding profession is the very core of Hofstra’s educational program. It is learning to provide a figure of stability, when patients need one most, to go beyond the academic and truly assume the role of healer. The sense that I have gotten from speaking with some students in the medical school is of an environment that really fosters partnership between students and mentors, an atmosphere embodied in an integrated faculty-student learning space. As someone interested in medical research as well as practice, the Feinstein Institute provides an ideal setting for me to explore my interest with great innovators in medical science. Whether elucidating the causes of sepsis, pioneering gene therapy in the treatment of Parkinson’s, or refining methods for cancer detection, scientists at the Feinstein Institute are changing the way medicine is delivered at the bedside. To work with such luminaries in medical technology, while witnessing the power of their innovations in my work with patients would really complete my education at Hofstra.
