So I attended a national portfolio day event. The lines were piling up quickly at all the usual places (mica, risd, pratt) and Cooper closest place so I booked it there and wound up fifth. Im not crazy over-confident or arrogant or anything (actually, I wish I had the confidence of those people I waited in line with) , I just wanted feedback from such an elite school and I was expecting to get ripped apart by the admissions person honestly even though I havent really had any negative feedback at all. Anyway things went well; very well actually. I got a very positive critique. He liked my representational technical drawings as well as my abstract work. And He ended up giving me a "faculty referred early decision" letter and said I had a good chance of getting in; and thats when things became conplicated for me (and why I have questions).

Basically, what exactly does this thing mean?

Does it increase my oppurtunity of getting in the school?

What are the drawbacks?

Do professors from this school usually hand these out?

What exactly is a "good chance" from cooper union?

After looking up the school and the facilities as well as the faculty I want to go now. But I dunno. The acceptance rate of this school is quite sobering. I didnt have any "strategy" for the review. I was myself and I just wanted feedback. And now Im seriously considering the school. I just want to put myself in perspective and I need to know if any of these things means I have a serious shot at the school.

Thank you in advance.

I don’t know anything about Cooper, but just want to congratulate you on a great review! Did you visit other schools as well?

I kind of remember your name but gotten fuzzy, and as a rule I don’t dig kids’ old posts to see what you are up to, so this is from what I know.

Every year the same question is asked, every year answered by someone, so if you search this forum, you will find them.
What it means is, you are their sort of artist, and yes, you have a very good shot. Esp, Mike big shot prof. Eseel heself said so. like your foot is in their door.
But they give away that faculty approved ED apps way more than their open seats. I don’t know the numbers/ratios but there are kids been told sho-in just did not make it in.
Why?
Hometest is THE most important criteria. It is long and tedious, tricky and hard. You have three or so weeks to complete and if you go ED, your holidays are wasted on it.
You can check my Cooper thread for past few years prompts, or see other blogs that you can see students’ works.

^skim off-topic stuff, the first and the last page got RD questions in it, for year 2010 and 2011
ED questions are different but similar.
OR
Sometimes “not knowing” “not caring” " not obsessing over" works wonder. You might have hard time adjusting if you get in and go in with that mindset, but just for getting in, really, anything could happen.
They choose you, if you are it.
Good luck and keep updating!

UPDATE

I got in to the school and am now preparing to make my transition!

Congratulations Timkerdes. That is wonderful. Enjoy NYC. Do you live near there or will you be coming for a whole new experience?

That is GREAT news! Congratulations!!
