Hi, I am currently a freshman at a small, rural, liberal arts college in Pennsylvania and I am looking to transfer to a more competitive, urban, and diverse college. My top choice as of new is Northeastern. For transfer admissions they say that if you have 24+ credits you do not need to include your high school grades. This is a huge plus for me because my high school grades were very poor but this year they have siginificantly improved.

My question is about credits. This semester I am taking 16 credits but I was considering dropping my Bio class because it is pulling down my GPA(from about 3.5 to 3.0) so that would leave me with only 12 credits this semester. With only 12 credits this semester included with the mid-term grades for next semester would I not have enough to credits to be exempt from submitting my high school grades? Im not really sure how credits work but the deadline for transfer admissions for fall '08 isnt until May 1st. Could I wait longer into the second semester to submit a midterm? Im really confused about that but it seems like credits dont work that way...the reason this is urgent is because I only have about a week left to Bio then you cant drop. I'd appreciate any feed back, thanks.

When they say they want 24+ credits, usually they’re referring to one academic year. So if you drop the bio class to 12 credits, but take 12 credits in the spring, you would still be fulfilling the requirement.

I’m pretty sure they want the midterm scores as soon as you get them (or by their deadline). You would be at a disadvantage if you put it off because they are factored into admissions, and you want everything going for you.

This is what I see on NEU’s website re transfer application requirements:
This is how I interpret that wrt your case. But you should check directly with NEU admissions office to be certain: You would have fewer than 24 semester hours of college-level work by the time you submit your application. Thus, they would not have enough college units to evaluate you and would want to see your hs transcript and scores. BUT you could submit mid-term grades for your spring term as a substitute for the above requirement, because you would have completed at least one full semester of academic work.

If 12 credits counts as a full semester at your current school.

If their transfer app is not due (for Fall 2008) until May 1, 2008… you should easily have your spring mid-term grades in hand by that time.

Thanks for the responses. I emailed NEU admissions so hopefully I will get a response back. You guys seem like you’re leaning towards it being ok to only have 12 credits this semester and submit mid term grades to be exempt from high school grades. The way I looked at it for the 24+ credit requirement is that you’re supposed to have 16 credits 1st semester and 16 2nd semester(mid term would be half so its 8) so that equals 24 total…I guess I’ll just wait for the response from NEU. I really appreciate the help, thanks =)

edit: one more question…does it look bad on the transcript to have a dropped course? I know 12 semesters is an easier load than 16 and they take that into account but does a dropped class look bad when I’m applying?
