urgent! UNC (3k)vs USC (15k/yr)

i am a transferring student.....i love both schools. is USC worth the extra $$? the only reason i like it better is that it is a private school.....anyone care to chime in on this?

No USC is not worth 13k/year over UNC.

Heck no! Go to UNC

confused…which USC is a private school or did I misread your post?

Southern California

not South Carolina

if i like USC a bit better, is it worth it?

Do you like it $24,000 more, assuming you have two more years to graduate? Will your parents be paying or will you be taking out loans? What is your parent’s opinion?

parents want me to go to USC. i like california more than UNC…USC is quickly getting better and better. its going to cost about 6k out of pocket and 9k in loans for USC…

now that i think about it, usc looks more attractive. i also want to major in internatinoal relations

Who is taking out those loans? You or your parents? Are you already on the hook for any college loans?

Run the numbers here and talk the results over with your parents: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

You are falling prey to the false idea…if it is private it must be better.

9k in loans a year is not a good idea, especially with a degree in IR. It is likely that you will need grad school after undergrad with that degree and most will not be fully funded. More debt for you is probably coming.

Go for UNC. As was stated above, USC is not worth an additional 13k/yr over UNC.

the main reason i like USC better is because it is alot more diverse. UNC is mostly public school kids from NC…USC is kids from all over.

it would be 9k /yr in loans, family will pay 6k…so this is for 2-3 years.

is 25k in loans really THAT bad? i want to live on the west coast for a bit…isnt USC’s networking much better than UNC for most areas?

Are you considering graduate school?

I think if you took a poll of students on CC, it is quite possible that half are getting a degree in IR. It is one of the ‘hot’ majors now. There is no way that there are enough decent paying jobs for people with that degree and interest. I would not want any debt if my intentions were a job in IR.

Most people in IR end up going to grad school shortly after graduation. More debt.

yeah, but i want to work after college first. either law school, business or phd in IR

well my major at UNC would be poli sci…thats worse than IR for job prospects…its etiher go to unc, debt free and work in DC or go to USC, 25k loans and work in LA

Why not major in Economics with a focus on international policy? Perhaps a minor in Poli Sci.

“USC is kids from all over”

It does have kids from all over, but a large contingent is from SoCal; 48% are from California. I think UNC is big enough that you’ll have plenty of out-of-state and international kids to hang out with if you like.

unc is OVER 80% in state…that isnt a debatable point. USC is more diverse…UNC is mainly public school kids from NC.

USC would be better for freinds and connections, UNC is cheaper…

I only live once and the friends and connections i make are most important for me in college. can someone play devils advocate here please? this choice is extremely hard…

“that isnt a debatable point”

Which is why I didn’t debate it. I didn’t say UNC was as diverse as USC. I said that there was plenty of diversity there. You don’t make friends with percentages; you make friends with individuals, and there are literally thousands of individuals at UNC who didn’t go to public schools in NC.

It doesn’t sound like you want a devil’s advocate. Sounds to me like you want people to agree with you that you should pay more for your preferred school. It’s your decision, but I don’t think USC is worth $25k more in debt than UNC in your situation.
