Full prompt of the supplement application: All students must submit an artist’s statement of no more than 500 words. You need to briefly describe your art practice and how your selected Visual Arts program will help to cultivate this practice.
I’m really confused on the art practice part. Is it asking me to describe my experience? or my style? or what I think art is about???
It’s due tomorrow at midnight and I still got a lot to fix so please help!!!
Thanks!!!
I think they want to know what you actually do when you make art - your process and your thinking. Have you ever looked at different artist’s statements to see how they read? I have always had the impression it’s a pretty standard format and there are lots of guidelines for how to write one if you google. The ones I have seen include artistic philosophy, influences or people studied with, medium and methodology through which one arrives at their finished piece (or multiple if the artist works with different media and methodologies). It’s not a resume of workshops or schools attended nor a list of pieces exhibited. It’s just you describing why you make the art you do, how you do it and what has influenced your artistic decisions.
What they likely REALLY want to know is the second part. How will you attending their school in your intended major contribute to your ability to become a better artist. What is the connection between your art and their course offerings?
