URI vs UofA vs ASU

I'm from New Jersey and am interested in majoring in Anthropology. I would love to travel out west (hence the interest in Arizona) and I have narrowed it down to around ten schools, some in Colorado, Texas and then the two in AZ. However, I found that University of Rhode Island, University of Arizona and Arizona State spark my interest the most. I also think I have a good chance of getting in.

I have toured all three schools but I have heard some really bad things about ASU even though I liked it a lot. I am stuck between which of the schools is 'better' and if ASU's rep is true. Help?

Are you a high school junior?

Talk to your parents about what they are willing to contribute and to get information to put in each school’s net price calculator.

What about your in-state publics like Rutgers?

Yes, I am. I don’t want to stay in-state.

Well, I am an Arizona native and I would pick U of A over ASU. It’s not about the “reputation” of ASU because I think it has good programs. But, generally, I would say that Univ of ARizona is more well thought of nationally and you are going to have to apply to grad school. So, U of A.

Also, U of A is in Tucson which is more of a college town.

Thank you SeraphsMom :D

I don’t want to stay in-state.

That is fine. However, going OOS can be very expensive. What are your parents saying? Will they pay the $35k+ per year for you to go to Arizona or ASU? If not, then that will be a huge problem that you probably won’t be able to overcome.

However, if your parents will pay whatever a college costs, then great!

mom2collegekids with all due respect, I asked about which school would be better, not if I should be in-state or not because of the cost :)

Don’t go to ASU. Even Universtiy of Arizona people look down on it. If you like west and south, Look at Texas A&M, University of Alabama, UC-Irvine, etc.

Thank you XTremePower :)

I understand that. I also understand that you want to go OOS. If your parents will pay, then SUPER, SUPER, SUPER. If they won’t, then to go OOS you’ll have to find OOS schools that will provide that needed aid.

Personally, I prefer Arizona over ASU unless you get into Barrett.

But…even if attending Arizona is better than ASU, if you don’t have the funding, then what difference does it make which is better? If you need aid/merit, and you feel that you have to go OOS, then you need to consider OOS schools that will provide that aid.

BUT…if you’re super lucky, then your parents will pay whatever a school costs. :)

Mom2Collegekids thank you so much for the help! :D
