I'm a black male who goes to a public Alabama High School. I heard that Vandy was trying make itselfs more "diverse"

I know that my ACT is VERY LOW, but I am going to take it and the SAT once more in the fall and possibly apply early. Besides the fact that my act score is low, do I even have a chance?

That's all for now, let me know on my chances.

I don't know how much ethnicity will play a role in your case, but I would wager that with your GPA, ACT, and ECs, you would be lucky to be admitted to the College of Arts and Science.

How well do you play your instrument? Are you applying to Blair? I'm not sure how Blair works, but I would guess that your musical ability would have a large impact on your decision. If you are applying to Blair, I think you have a better chance.

I play my instrument very well, and I'm applying to the College of Arts and Science.

bring el gpa up a bit for A&S say like to a 3.7 and definitely work on the ACT score. Play up the band thing that's really cool and not a lot of A&S applicants will have that. You should consider getting in touch with the band director and talk to him about a scholarship and pursuing band at Vandy. Your chances are decent but no one can say for sure. As long as you package yourself right you have a shot just like anyone else. It's all about the packaging that's how I got in although I did apply to Peabody and almost everything I did related to teaching so I don't know how much help that is to you. Anyway, good luck and all that.

Is Peabody harder to get into? Excuse my unfamiliarity. My knowledge regarding Vandy is sparse.

It's sad that I am responding to this so quickly but anything to avoid my room. Peabody has a higher admisisons rate than the other schools but it also has fewer applicants. But most of the kids in Peabody have good stats esp. the people I have met. If something at Peabody genuinely interests you then I'd say apply but if A&S is your first choice apply to A&S. I applied to Peabody b/c I wanted to be a liscensed teacher and get some teaching experience even though I know I want to be a doctor more than a teacher.

yor act is below the average....no chance

Actually, I've already spoken with the band director about myself and I do have a chance. You, gatechboy, must understand that standardized test scores are NOT everything. You cannot rule me out and say that I have a 0% chance. Besides, just because my act is below average does not mean that I cannot pull it up by time. Next time, think about what you type and if it is applicable in a few months. Thank you for your opinion.

honestly, your ethnicity should help you out. but still, vandy reported that over 900 minorities applied last year, so it's still competitive. PULL up your ACT score to a minimum of a 24 or 25. You also need to have great recommendations and stellar essays. What is unique about you? really play that up big time. Also, i recommend you take the SAT as soon as possible. I know one AA who got in with a 23.
Good Luck!

if you are applying to vanderbilt, it is imperative that you know which school you are going to apply to. the acceptance rates, ACT/SAT scores, and GPA for each one is different. Seeing that you have a passion for band, you might look into Blair, their music school. pulling up that ACT score (try the SAT too!) won't be a bad idea. good luck!

Well, I'd love to apply to Blair, but I'm looking for a major somewhat like political science, psy, sociology, or philiosophy(sp?). If I apply to Blair then I do not want to be obligated to major in music. I am going to law school afterwards and I know that my undergrad major can be whatever, but I still want to have some sort of "analyzing" background. I'm not sure if I was clear :)
